So, I was thinking of bring a router to UCLA with me, but I was talking to someone who said that at their school, this wasn't allowed, so I wanted to make sure that this was allowed and would actually work (I've never really set one up or anything, so a normal router would work with the internet at UCLA wouldn't it? The only reason I'm not sure is because of the fact that you have to log on and stuff)

This is allowed, but you just have to register your wireless router and any laptops that will connect to the router. The router can be registered at STC, while the laptop can be registered once you plug it into an Ethernet wall jack on campus.

Having wireless in my room is pretty handy, cuz then I don't have to remember to connect my Ethernet, and I can work on my comfy bed.

Thanks, yay! another excuse to go shopping, I love shopping for electronics almost as much as shoes <3.

Is there wireless connections in the rooms (I'm at hedrick summit)? Or do you only get wireless in the lounge areas?

No, you have to bring your own wireless router, if not use the lounge.

Remember that wireless is not as secure as the ethernet connection, so be careful when accessing bank accounts and other sensitive information.

Oh ok.. Well if in the room, we can use the wired internet, right? And there's a place to plug it in at each desk, so its convenient (I hope)?

yes, if you're in a triple you will need to get a router from STC to get 3 ports (there's a base of two in each room, one on each side)

every room has 2 ethernet ports... so in a triple one person will have a port to themselves, the other two will need to use the splitter.

single rooms will have one port... i'm still gonna set up wireless in my room anyway. i hated dragging my ethernet cable around last year.

so- if you're gonna stick with ethernet- GET A VERY LONG CABLE! there's no such thing as a too long cable, but one that's too short will be immensely frustrating.

or go wireless ;)

So if we're in a triple, will STC loan/provide a splitter, or will we have to buy one ourselves (roommates)?

the router is on loan from STC, but they charge you a crapload if you lose it or its parts. It does not have wireless either. I would recommend that you just go ahead and buy a wireless router for 40-70 and be done with it.

You can bring your own, which is much cheaper than if you buy at a UCLA store. The cost at UCLA for a 14 feet ethernet cable is $10.

14 feet is very long and sufficient for the room.

ok, i just want to make sure that the rooms really have ethernet cables...

i will be living in Reiber Hall, triple

the reason i ask is because the room i lived in for orientation (Reiber Terrace) only had phone jacks, aka couldnt fit my ethernet cable, :(

so please let me know.

Well the UCLA store is cheaper than some retailers...That can go for $15-20 at other stores.

lol... are you serious? The panels should each have a phone, ethernet, and coaxial jack...

The cables aren't provided. The ports are. Each room is supposed to have the same panel, as ucapplicant said.

You can get them wholesale for about $1-2 each. But there is a small risk that a single band would be broken.

well my room had a bootleg phone jack and a half-broke electric plug

I read on the UCLA website that you need to register your laptop? Where would you go to do that? and when?

Plug in your laptop to any ethernet port, and launch your browser. STC's webpage will pop up with instructions.
