Sexual Orientation Thread

@116: What lockn said.

My All-Male Catholic school in a conservative religious country was one of the most liberal places I’ve ever been*. There were several openly gay people. I know what you mean, but testosterone doesn’t generate homophobia.

I’m queer. I’ve called myself bi, gay, asexual and homoerotic at different times.

*US Catholicism may or may not lack the academic bent that characterized the Catholic church this homo sang in, so it may actually be more backward in the US, but then look at the liberal Catholic politics. It’s more about the local culture than the actual religion. Please don’t call Catholicism homophobic. Standard Christopolitical fare is to go with what your mommy taught you and then call it the Word of God.

I lol’d irl. There is no central authority on feminism, and you usually don’t hear about “sex roles” from feminists - the topic is “gender roles” which are, by definition, not biological.
What about male feminists?
Some forms of feminism are sex egalitarianism, and I doubt any fellow feminist would oppose a sex-blind draft. Put the women on steroids if they need it.

Yeah, but racism (and other prejudice) isn’t just against black people. It seems to me that a lot of the discrimination in Europe is based in Islamophobia an euro- and ethnocentrism.
Think about the way Turks are treated in Germany. Turks are generally considered to be a white people, but they are also largely Muslim (though Turkey is a secular country). Of course, we do see some racism in Germany against blacks, eg: the reaction to the selection of a black woman as “Germany’s Next Top Model,” but most of the prejudice seems Islamophobic. And of course, the biggest example of German Islamophobia in the news right now is probably the violent murder of Marwa Sherbini, who, a few months pregnant, was stabbed to death in a German court in front of her husband and child. When her husband tried to defend her, it was assumed that he was the attacker and he was shot and injured.
And we definitely can’t forget about racism and Islamophobia in France. The riots a few years back, Sarkozy’s bans on those items which allow Muslims to practice their religion, etc. Yes, the wearing of other religious items is banned, but I think it’s quite obvious that these items are more integral to the practice of Islam and that therefore, Muslims are the main target of this legislation.
Then there are those cartoons which appeared in the Danish newspaper portraying Islam as a religion of terrorists, etc, etc.

Bleh.

“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is. I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.”

I seem to be the only lesbian here, and I’m definitely not the feminist-butch type. In fact pretty much 100% of the people I meet tell me that there’s no way I could be lesbian because of “how feminine I look”.
I’ve been with my girlfriend since sophomore year, and we’re both freshman in college this fall (it’s been more than 2 1/2 years), and each of our families (extensive families included) know and are pretty accepting of it.

We were the only gay couple of any kind in our whole HS (in california, btw), and that caused a lot of issues. A teacher complained about us and we had to be taken into the office, and after I told one of my friends who’s mom was a teacher, they had the teacher who complained fired under “discriminating acts” or something like that.

Oh, and some ****heads grandpa or something yelled at us from his old cadillac when we were just outside sitting next to each other.

I’ve only ever dated guys, but i’ve fooled around with girls. I consider myself straight, but firmly believe sexuality if fluid…

Fooling around with the other sex makes you bi. Stop denying it.

This is especially true for guys. If a guy has gay sex even once, he is bi or gay. Your sexuality doesn’t morph over time.

Wow. I was called gay yesterday on HSL and today once in school. ***? I’m straight…

HI! im gay, and 17. no, parents dont know and imo i dont know how theyd react. Descrimination?? not really. there arent a lot of gay ppl at my school (we basically all know each other). i ASSUME enough people should know by time now that im gay, however im not overly flamboyant as some of my fellow gay peers are. ppl take it as a shock when i tell them that im gay and usually dont believe me :(

hatersunite: I think you mean the same sex…hahah
and maybe so…but that’s not what i choose to identify with

Flaw #1: There are no such things as sex roles, and gender roles are definitely not natural human tendencies. I loathe and despise kids. I’m a woman. Does that make me unnatural? Gender conditioning and gender roles are social constructs. They have been around for thousands upon thousands of years. There was sexual equality prior to the Neolithic revolution. However, the invention of agriculture changed society and thus, created more specified and stratified gender roles. We ARE, however, trying to eliminate people who think gender roles are natural and therefore correct.

Flaw #2: I definitely don’t hate men. I have met remarkably few feminists who hate men. We do, as a whole, tend to frown upon male-dominated societies and male-dominating behavior. Generally I like them. I do have a problem with boys, though. They irritate me.

Flaw #3: There are plenty of men who hate women - generally the ones that relegate them to their gender roles (oh wait, but those are natural, so it’s okay) and the ones who target women for rape, abuse, and murder.

Perfect!

This is exactly what I mean. Read the 1st and 3rd sentences.

FWIW, Yes that does make you unnatural. You hate your own species. You hate yourself 10 years ago.

The rest of your post is just factually incorrect. That’s the great thing about wacko feminists. No matter what they say, you can simply go to science and the argument is over. There are sex roles and sex roles are not social institutions. All species have sex roles.

But thanks for the perfect example. You did a great job of setting yourself up.

hatersunite-are you always such a tool?

I thought people on this board were smart. Do you guys just not take classes like psych?

The ignorance in applicannot’s post is off the charts. Do you seriously want me to go into the biology, sociology, and psychology aspects that prove sex roles. Because I’m open for that if you want to open up your mind a little. Or you could just stay ignorance.

Ignorance = The number 1 cause of the world’s problems.

Oh and BTW people who hate kids are terrible humans. It’s sort of awesome though because they naturally eliminate themselves from the gene pool. FTW!

Humans DO have sex roles (ie women have eggs and men have sperm and you need the two to have a baby) there’s no going around that… yet (give science a bit more time and I might have to edit this post).

HOWEVER, gender roles are completely made up by human culture. If they were biological then they would be universal to all humans and they are not.

Do you think men are naturally more aggressive than women?

Do you think men and women like to pursue different activities? Or is that just forced on them by society?

No. Society.

There are many war tribes in Africa where they have solely women warriors that are much more fierce than men.

Different activities are forced on you by society. If it were not ALL women would LOVE to shop and HATE sports. I love sports and hate shopping with a passion. Gender roles are the product of your society. Show me evidence otherwise.

Uh ohh … don’t provoke the feminist.

I am not a feminist. I don’t really care about gender roles TBH. I just hate when people say that gender roles are biological.

Sociology and psychology are affected by society. Which means those areas subject to the whims of society, and are to a point institutions of society. Bio is up for debate, though.
