I've pretty much chosen my essay topic but I'm wondering what the essay is supposed to be like.

Does it matter if you write about a very broad topic like world hunger in general or narrow/specific like Japan and China fighting over islands? And what if your topic becomes outdated by the time an admissions officer reads it two months after you write it?

I wrote my topic on something that was fairly big a few years ago but had lost some media coverage in the year that I applied. I was accepted, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your essay being “outdated” (Besides, your admissions officer will understand). In terms of broad vs. specific, I don’t think it matters as long as you write a well-written essay on a topic that you are passionate about.

Mine was on how the US policy on torture violates international law, and though I included specific examples the paper as a whole was pretty broad. Though I also know people who wrote about something very specific. Like the above person said, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s well written.
