For our purposes: for an undecided freshman probably aiming for something in STEM or business. But for anyone else interested in the comparison, opinions on any aspect of the schools could be helpful. Thank you.
Sjsu is famous for its stem programs. For business, I’m not sure.
Sjsu has stronger students, probably in stem, with the top 25% hitting 610+ whereas at sfsu it’s 540. Sjsu average GPA is 3.4 whereas sfsu 3.2. Guessing it’s due to a few highly selective majors (CS, software engineering). A slightly higher percentage if students live in campus freshman year (56% sjsu vs 48% sfsu) making them both essentially commuter schools.
SJSU is known for their business and engineering so definitely go for it. If you’re iffy on the school, I’d recommend you visit the school itself. I’m a local so I don’t prefer to go to SJSU just because I want to get away from home but it’s definitely a nice campus. The school itself is in downtown so people tend to call it ghetto which it kinda is but it’s not as bad as CSULB. (I visited CSULB a month ago and I honestly would rather go to SJSU than CSULB but that’s just my preference). In terms of classes, I’ve heard from friends that the professors are helpful and they’re pretty good. One of my friend is a psychology major and he told me the classes he’s taken are all taught by professors and he hasn’t had any where the TAs are teaching. Class sizes are smaller than UCs and there’s plenty of opportunities for you to have hands on learning. I heard they also have study abroad programs for business majors and some of my friends have traveled to Korea, Spain, etc. Good luck!
IMHO, the weather is much nicer in SJ…
