Share your SAT Improvement stories!

Hi everyone. I took the January SAT and scored a 2030 (R:540 W:740 M:750). I'm taking the SAT again this May, and looking to bump my score up. I was wondering if anyone would like to share stories of improvement. I'm hoping this can be both inspirational and educational for others!

For those willing to share, how much did you improve by? What did you do to improve? Any advice/inspirational words for others?

I used to score in the range of low 500s on CR during my first practice tests, but improved to 640-680 .What did I do - Improved my vocabulary and Did a lot of practice tests AND (this is the most important part) actually reviewed my mistakes so that I wouldnt make the same ones again. It is stupid just to keep doing practice tests without reviewing what you have missed
Your WR and M are quite good ,you just need to improve your CR .You cant be dump or anything, you are just like all the people who struggle at CR :)

I used to get 1700s-1800s on my practice tests from princeton review, but through hard work and a bit of dedication, I was able to bring it up slightly; in March, I received the following scores:

Writing-700
Critical Reading-590
Math-790

Total:2080

I’m very upset about my Critical Reading score though. I will work more towards improving that section :D

My goal is to get a 2250 on my June SAT test:

Writing-750
Math-800
Reading-700

Well, the Blue Book bumped up my CR + writing from 1430 to 1590. My math went down 80 points though.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! We’re all in this together…:D

First practice test ever=1950 or so

March SAT

CR 800 (rose from 650)
WR 800
M 710

xatuuatx, wow your CR score is AMAZINGLY impressive, especially considering that your score was initially a 650.

I got a 590 on the March test,do you think it’d be possible for me to raise it to at least 700?

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET? this is all I’m asking for…just practice tests?

Appreciate the help

CR: 660 M: 700 W: 670 (2030) to CR: 760 M: 730 W: 680 (2170)

Studied vocab from Direct Hits, went through a few practice problems (not exams) in the Blue Book and Gruber’s for math, reviewed writing MC from my first SAT exam and my two PSAT exams. Could’ve done better had I put more effort into studying… didn’t do enough practice on the essay.

Went up 420 points from Oct SAT to Mar SAT. Also took it in Jan.

Biggest improvement. CR- 550 in Oct/ 690 in Mar

I just did a bunch of practice from the blue book, did all of the tests. Only like two under test conditions.

What is the blue book?

It’s the CollegeBoard Official SAT Study Guide.

but when you guys alr finished the blue book, what did you do after that? did you attempt other books as well?
I scored 1920 in Jan (CR 540, Wr 640, M 740) and i’m aiming for 600 CR, 700 WR, 800 M
almost 2 more wks to the May SAT and I’ currently practising with the Kaplan Premier… my CR is now 580… sigh…

Sophomore test 1

1680 {M 500, CR 650, W 530}

Sophomore test 2 (No prep)

1870 {M 560, CR 670, W 640)

Apparently I woke up 2 months later and went from sucking in writing to quite respectable. Any recommendations on how to get math to 650, CR to 700, and W to 700? Or will it likely raise this much in 3 years on its own?

I scored around a 1900 on my first practice test, but I worked through the princeton review and the blue book in about a week total, but that only got my score up to about a 2050. I went and asked a calc teacher at my school to explain some of the math questions i wasn’t getting, and i made flashcards for words i didn’t know on the SC and now my score is hovering around 2100-2200 :)

I think I am a bad example, but here it goes.

I studied 300 vocabulary words and did the entire blue book (almost- about 4/5 full practice tests). I was overly prepared, yet my score did not reflect that.

January
CR- 680
M- 690
W- 690

Needless to say, I was devastated. I had put so much pressure on myself to get above a 2100, that when I got a 2160 I felt as if I had failed.

For the March SAT, I didn’t study at all. I figured that if my score was so bad after studying for hours, studying more may do more harm. I was right :]

March SAT

CR- 710
M-710
W-720

Good Luck. I’m sure you can improve!

to do well on the writing section, the best thing you can possibly do is just relearn all the grammar rules so you know english grammar inside out. For the essay, just read those sample essays that got a 12 and follow the same format because those are the things they are looking for (that’s all i pretty much did and i got a 12).

for CR, the most important thing is to practice, practice, practice. However, you need to know the types of questions they ask you and how to answer them
