Shipping Stuff

I have a few quick questions:
[ul]
[]What address should I use when I am shipping things to myself at Caltech?
[]Is there something I should label on the package(s) to uniquely identify that they are mine such as my UID number?
[li]When I can I start picking things up once they arrive?[/li][/ul]

Thanks.

It's in the new student handbook. The Address looks something like this
"Name of Student"
Incoming Student
c/o Caltech Central Receiving
address

If you don't have your handbook, I can get the info for you in a little bit. Right now I am about to go out.

Gra,
I'd asked a similar question and got this response

The Tech Express, which handles all of our mail, is only open Monday through Friday, 9:30am-6pm. So no, he won't be able to pick it up on a Sunday.

so if you're arriving Sunday, you'll have to wait til Monday.
hope that helps

Thanks lizzardfire and oaklandmom. I found the address. Thanks.

How long does it take to ship packages from the east coast and process them through the mail system at Caltech? Will cookies be stale by the time they are in a student's hands?

Mail was about 4 days unless over a weekend, then an extra day or two. This was from Michigan. Ironically enough, it's only 4 days from Michigan to England, too.

I can say from experience that cookies are definitely not stale. ;-)

I waited a month for a package once. Get a tracking number if it's something important/large.

What shipping method, Joe?

One word of advice: never, EVER ship anything with parcel post. I've had packages take over 2 months to go only halfway across the country.

This was regular US Mail, but small packages (Mom sending me cookies and stuff), not like huge desktop-computer-containing boxes or anything.

I should say that I DID have a problem shipping books to England with US Mail. It was supposed to take 6-10 days but instead took 6 weeks. I later found out that this was because although I'd told them I wanted airmail media mail, they gave me a shipping bag that was surface media mail, so even though I paid the airmail amount in postage, they shipped it by ship. I did get a refund on that.

Never had a problem shipping between CA and MI though.

what if you're a prefrosh and you want to order stuff for your dorm room online? Or if I want to order stuff from amazon? There are two addresses listed in the book, one for luggage ad belongings, and one for mail delivery. which do i send it to, or is there someone I can talk to about it.

Do you plan on ordering now or later? When you get things later, you just need to use your MSC:
Your Name
MSC ###
Pasadena, CA 91126
If you're shipping it now, before you get your MSC number, use the address posted above for incomming students.

Also, when posting these types of questions, don't forget that we don't have the booklets you were sent, so we have no idea what it is you're looking at.

Right.

One is for "Shipping your luggage/belongings"

Your Name
Incoming Student
c/o Caltech Central Receiving
391 S. Holliston Ave.
Pasadena, CA, 91125

The other is for " Mail Delivery"

Your Name,
Incoming Student
California Institute of Technology
Pasadena, CA 91126

Oh, the first is for large items. Small packages (like books from Amazon) can be sent to the latter. If you want to check on that, the Tech Express is the office you want to call.
