If we ship some of my son's stuff to Caltech in the next couple of weeks, will he be able to pick it up on Sunday? I was thinking of shipping his bedding..but not if he can't pick it up on Sunday. Thanks!

And on another note: Can anyone explain what the Bursar means in the postcard my son received that says "you will not receive the first term statement after Sept 10." Does that mean he'll get it before Sept. 10? We emailed the Bursar's office but got an automatic reply that they're out for a few days.

The Tech Express, which handles all of our mail, is only open Monday through Friday, 9:30am-6pm. So no, he won't be able to pick it up on a Sunday.

Yes, it came on Friday. Nothing much just the website for the Bursar for info regarding billing www.bursar.caltech.edu and the note: You will not receive the first term statement after September 10. I am still puzzling over what that really means.

Truth! Yeah, at worst your son can sleep on a towel or something, Pasadena is especially nice in September (and really Pasadena is quite nice all year round anyway).

My first night in Pasadena, not only did I not use any bedding, I slept with wet washcloths draped over myself and a fan going full blast. It was unbelievably hot for a guy from Michigan.

Depends where really, in the Mods you have air conditioning and in some of the rooms in the North Houses you have window units (but during the heat wave a bit ago, the North Houses were pretty much sweltering). When the South Houses reopen they'll have air conditioning too.

My D is going to Caltech in September. We have not received any information of billing. Are we supposed to go to the Bursar's site and see what the bill is? Since we will be remitting the money from India we need a hard copy of the bill (we still have monetary restrictions with regard to international transfers). Are we supposed to download the bill from this site? When my D called up Caltech, they told her to bring a cheque and pay on registration... BUT no one has given any figure! Since time is getting short I was wondering whether I should just divide the annual figure given in the I-20 form sent by Caltech (the I-20 is the form required by International students to get their US visa, and it carries informtion with regard to APPROXIMATE yearly costs so that the visa officer can determine whether the applicant has the wherewithall to fund themselves in the US).
Thanks in advance!

Rikitikitavi, If your D is not receiving financial aid or merit scholarships, the bursar's office website has the amounts due each term(Annual tuition, fees, housing, divided by 3.) Travel, books, and personal expense money are not billed.
If your D has financial aid or merit scholarships, the finaid office might know better how the financial aid/merit scholarships will be applied. We received a final financial aid offer which showed us how the funds will be applied, for my son the funds will be distributed over the 3 terms. But I don't know if this would be any different for an international student.
I hope that helps.

Rikitikitavi,
oh, I'm sorry, I missed the part of your post that said you need a hard copy of the bill due to monetary restrictions..hmm..it seems like you will have to call the bursar's office and push them to send you something. I wonder if the person your daughter talked to though she would just have a check book with her and be able to write a check on the spot. But it sounds like that won't work for you.
Maybe the Internation Student Programs Office could be of assistance to you & your D. http://www.isp.caltech.edu/

Steel Pangolin& OaklandMom: Thanks for your replies. The page with the expenses printed out will suffice as the hard copy along with the I-20. Just to clarify...the restrictions on transfers of money are for purpose/use. As long as you have proof of attending an educational institution, you are allowed to transfer out $100,000 per student/child per year. This is geared up more to the professional degrees which are twice as expensive as the undergraduate degrees (I don't even want to think about that right now!). Steel Pangolin-because of the 13.5 hour time difference, I will call the Bursar's office a bit later on just to make sure to whom the Banker's cheque should be made out to, and to ensure that the figure on the website covers everything such as insurance, activity fees if any etc. Thanks!

I received an email from the Bursar's office this morning regarding the postcard we received. It said "The sentence should have said " you will not receive a statement until after Sept. 10." The fall statements will be generated Sept. 10 and be mailed Sept. 11." Thought the other prefrosh might like clarification too!
