I want to sign up for a BedBath&Beyond account, which requires my Duke shipping address. How do you all write out your shipping address when you receive things at Duke? (Dorm, Room#, Duke, etc?). I would want these things on move in day.

Here's the standard format that I have used:

Your Name
Your room #
Your Box # (don't use P.O.- someone told me that this makes mail take longer)
Durham, NC 27708

The post office also has a certain date that they'll start accepting packages for students. I can't remember what day it is... it might be your move-in day, since you get your mailbox key then.

i just couldnt live without my bb&b

thx seahorse

Ah, but freshmen don't have box #'s yet. When do we get them? How did you ship your things freshman year?

I think we got them with our room assignments. Personally, I had my parents drive my stuff down because I was already on campus for project BUILD.

OK, I flew down and this is what I did. I used university shipping (www.universityshipping.com), and they picked up most of my stuff & delivered it to my door during move-in. I also checked 2 pieces of luggage with random clothes, etc. so I didn't ship too many boxes (it got expensive). For BB&B stuff, I would suggest buying some things you really, really need/want and shipping them down in boxes that way, and for the larger things just waiting until you get to Durham. There's a BB&B right nearby and if you REALLY can't find a ride (doubtful), you can always get a cab - it's close enough that it shouldn't be expensive at all.

I did a very stupid thing and bought a chair before going down to school (I found one I loved at Fortunoff's), but I just kept it in the original plastic wrap & stuck a label on it, and University Shipping still brought it down for me. I believe it's run by Duke students, they're really nice, and no one I know had a problem with their service, so I'd recommend it. Plus, near the end of the year they send you a nice little e-mail reminding you that you used them and asking what you want to do about going home.

if you have a bed bath and beyond...use it. they have a program where you can go to your local store and pic out everything you want. you creat a type of registree (you get a scanner and swipe whatever you want). you set this up though the store so they send the list to the bb&b near duke and they gather everything you need...all you need to do is pick it up. i did this and it couldn't have been easier. also, you pay when you pick it up - so u can change you mind and add/delete any items you want.

they don't advertise this...so you might need to ask about it. go the the bridal registree desk and ask...they should be able to help.

I don't know why, but I did the BB&B thing last year with the scanner deal, did everything right, sent it to the right BB&B in Durham, etc. But for some reason, when I got down to Durham and went to pick it up, they only had half of my stuff. Don't know why that happened, but I vowed never to do it again - it only made my move-in day more stressful, since I had to run around the store trying to remember what I had originally picked out and get it again, and a good amount of the things I'd wanted were already sold out. It was really, REALLY annoying. So yeah, I personally wouldn't suggest it at all, but who knows -- maybe I was just a fluke or something.

Ah thanks! I also need to know where to ship boxes though, like what bandcampgirl did. Being from Cali can be such a hassle!
Bandcampgirl, what address did you give that service? I'm still not sure what to give as my "shipping address" for these websites.

If you go to the site, they only ask for your dorm + room number. Since it's run by Duke people, that's all that they need - they know the campus. Just go check out the site, it should explain everything -- that is, if that's the service you want to use.

use your dorm room # and po box # (use two address lines) if you're shipping anything to durham.

if you're from cali you can't use university shipping, so whatever you're not having a store reserve in durham/flying out with, send through collegeboxes.com -- they deliver to your room.

Except, crap, now that I've suggested this, I really hope you're from MA, RI, CT, PA, NJ, NY, MD, DE or VA. I'm from NY, so I never gave it a second thought.

If you're not from one of those states, try CollegeBoxes (www.collegeboxes.com) -- they also ship. I used them for summer storage.

ETA: Haha, yeah I think between my post and bluestar's, it's pretty apparent that Duke people really only use 2 shipping services. It's also probably not a coincidence that come move-out time at the end of the year, I saw flyers literally everywhere I turned for both of them.

well...i had no problems with bb&b. it was easy as could be for me. i couldn't have asked for a better way to move down to duke from the philly area. got stuff from bb&b, packed my clothes (on the plane --> southwest is really cheap between raleigh and philly) and rented a van in raleigh. it was simple and cheaper than driving (gas $).
