How often do people dress up in college. i'm trying to pack and i want to take about 7 heels and 20 shoes total. i'll also bring about 3 professional outfits. are there many opportunities to wear these things?

i was also thinking about some gowns since i know colleges have school dances.

I brought button-downs for layering, however I was never in a situation where I needed to wear nice shoes. However, there was a need for a jacket and tie at one point, however that was for a wine party (not a serious one, mind you), so even then it wasn’t a big deal.

I’m in my junior year, I’ve never had to dress up for anything yet.
This year I probably will as I will be doing some field work. But chances are you’ll never use them (I guess you could go to a couple of formals, but I find them lame).
20 shoes seems very excessive but I’m not much of a girl in the shoe/purse area.

As for partying (which I rarely do) I would suggest flats. Seems the route many girls go. The ones that go for the 4inch heels stumble far more stupidly on their drunken walk back to the dorm. And at most college parties, girls certainly aren’t dressing up. They get dressed down, next to nothing.

I brought 7 pairs of heels (for some reason?), flip-flops and sneakers when I started school last year. But really, at school I barely wear heels (even though I do love going out/dressing up) - I’d bring 3 pairs of heels at most. Especially if you are going to a big school, you’ll be walking a lot and it will absolutely murder your feet to wear heels too often. I.e. to parties I had to walk 20-40 mins from my dorm. Not comfortable, even in my comfy heels. Flats are DEFINITELY the way to go. Plus, at most parties your heels will become completely ruined due to drunk people spilling all sorts of liquor onto them.

As for professional outfits, have 1. 2 or 3 is pushing it - just in case, if you are going to a job interview or something you might need it but I brought dress pants/dress suit and I didn’t wear it once. So unnecessary.

Bring maybe 1 formal-ish dress and 1 semi-formal dress at most in case there is some sort of charity ball or formal that your school holds. Party dresses also suffice for most occasions. [All this is based off wardrobes for non-sorority girls. If you plan on rushing or joining a sorority, your wardrobe would likely be considerably different because you need a lot more extra dressy clothes for random occasions]. If you go to parties/clubs a lot or like dressing up, you have plenty of opportunities to do so. It is really up to you. At parties, a lot of girls dress up (and a lot of girls come very casual).

Professional stuff bring around like just one or two. Your barely going to need it, if your in a business kind of major you might if you join a club that travels around to different places.

Nice to bring a formal/semi-formal dress, a few would be good cause you might have a ball or formals to go to.

Regular party clothes, don’t bring anything fancy. You probably will have stuff that will stain your clothes maybe like jungle juice. If there are themed parties, you most likely will be going to wal-mart or some place to buy clothes.

That’s too many shoes. I’m bringing two pairs of heels, one with low heels for something I’ll have to walk around in, and one pair with higher heels but I ride my bike around everywhere so I wear flats every day. All of my shoes fit in a small suitcase. Just get a good pair of dressy flats and bring just a couple of your favorite heels. If you dont have a car you are going to be walking everywhere and if you go somewhere like a concert, standing around for hours in heels is going to kill your feet.

I had to present practically every day for my major last year so I wore slacks a lot but most of my casual shirts could pass as something business-y.

If you can bring them, have room for the shoes and realistically think you’ll wear them all, bring them. My roommate had a hanging shoe thing in her closet that was plastic and collapsible and held about 40 pairs, and it wasn’t in the way/didn’t take up too much room.

As far as professional outfits are concerned, it depends. I participate in Model United Nations, and when we go to conferences, I need to bring along four or five professional outfits. They’re also useful for job interviews and banquets (most of which happen at the end of the year, though). Also, what major are you? I have friends who are business majors at my school and, when they have to give presentations, they have to come to class in business attire.

What college are you going to that has school dances? I’ve never heard of this, lololol.

well if you have space and think you’ll actually wear them, why not bring them?
And ya for parties, wear flats or other shoes you don’t care for, but if you like clubbing, then bring the many heels =)

I’ll never understand why women have such an obsession with shoes… I pretty much always have three pair of shoes: running shoes, dress shoes and casual comfortable shoes. Obviously, I wear the latter most of the time.

As far as business attire goes… I wear my suit about once or twice a month on average, whether it’s for job/internship interviews, career fairs, wine & cheese events, banquets in various engineering competitions, etc. I’m in the Student Government as well, so I get invited to different social events quite a lot, which is why I wear my suit that often.

I only have one suit though… and about 4 shirts/ties to go with it. Three outfits might be pushing it a little. I’d say two would be fine.

Im a shorty so I am always in heels. I am used to walking in them for hours. For college i probally will have my wedge flipflops lol but i dont see why you need 20 pairs of shoes, if u were my roomate I would get angry

I don’t understand how some of you can get by with 3 pairs of shoes…maybe in Florida but in diverse climates you need a variety of footwear. Here are the shoes I brought to college (I’m northeastern):

Rainboots - essential in NYC! Work well in slush/snow with warm socks. 1 pair is fine.

Boots - remember to waterproof…good for Fall/Winter. 1 pair will do.

Sneakers - 1 pair unless you’re the sporty type.

Heels - 1 pair plain black pumps - they’re dressy, go with everything, look classy. Also 2-4 pairs of pretty/sexy heels for going out. No more than 5 pairs of heels!

Sandals/Flip flops/Wedges - Good for warmer months, don’t bring too many! 2 pairs of flip flops and 2 sandals are good enough, the less the better.

Flats/ballet shoes - casual shoes to wear everyday, 1-3 pairs is enough.

Parent here of a D at a NE LAC. I can’t remember exactly what she packed last year, but I can tell you what she wore/needed. She needed a skirt, blouse, jacket & pumps for an interview type situation. Also needed a classic skirt and sweater that she wore with tights and flats for professional, yet less casual situations. As far as party type dresses, it obviously depends on what social situations you will be in, but D needed more than she had, so she found herself borrowing and swapping with friends. She probably had 8-10 dances/parties that she needed to dress up for. Needing party type dresses was the one thing she was not prepared for. If you think you will be needing party type dresses, at the minimum, bring a classic black dress and 1 or 2 more.
