Shooting at Wake Forest

Looks like families can get updates here. Sad state of affairs with guns on college campuses.

That’s awful.

What is The Barn? Is it on the Wake Forest campus or the Winston Salem State campus? It’s not clear from the article.

Wake Forest says it’s a “student-centered social place” on the Reynolda campus.

So sad. Wake is good about sending out incident notifications (they are actually required to by Federal law) but honestly there have been a few assaults on students by strangers on campus, or just off-campus over the last couple of years. And the late-night security shuttle to pick up students from the off-campus parking lot is not super-reliable.

Assaults by strangers on campus? Yikes.

This was a tragic but avoidable murder.

Several years ago black students who were attending a similar event complained to the administration that the campus police were harassing them and were biased against them. The truth was that there were many fights at these events, usually instigated by outsiders such as students from WSSU or who knows where. The administration responded by instituting all kinds of diversity and bias re-education programs for its police force. Students were put in charge of security at events like this.

Officers became afraid of losing their jobs if they were accused of any kind of bias against black students so they backed off from monitoring and policing these events. I don’t think there was any police presence the night of the murder. It was easy for a violent armed outsider to attend the event and commit a murder and escape. He still has not been caught.

There have been many other serious and sometimes violent crimes committed against Wake students who live off campus in the neighborhoods close to campus. In my opinion Wake Forest is not a safe campus. I am glad that my daughter will be graduating this year. Fortunately she lives on campus and she would not attend evevts like the one where the murder occurred.

@wakedad2018 Yikes. Your review is completely scaring me off. We are planning on visiting Wake with our S19. I was already not too sure about fit and now I’m thinking even more that it’s not the right place. Who wants to send their child off to school and be worried about violence? Aren’t there campus police that would be around a party at The Barn? I wonder if Wake will see a drop in interest…

There was a nearly identical murder at Cornell University a couple years ago and it hasn’t hurt their application levels.

There’s been very little reported on this, which is scaring me off even more.

@chb088 Exactly. No updates. No one arrested…

I live an hour away @homerdog and they never reported on it at all in our local paper. I’m hesitant to look here too now, unless we can get some info.

As I stated above, there were no campus police at the event because several years ago there was a controversy about supposed harassment of black students by the campus police. Students “police” the events themselves. How did that work out?

Here is a link to a story about the near fatal shooting of a Wake student duting a robbery in summer 2016. No one was caught. Wake Forest is NOT safe!

I am a parent of a Freshman at Wake. While this is a very tragic incident I don’t fear for my sons safety.

I feel like the school takes these things very seriously and as a parent I always feel informed. The incident referenced above is terrible but it happened off campus at 2:30 in the morning and unfortunately could happen anywhere. I’m sure the school is always working on how to keep the students safe at all times. In no way am I saying that this is not very serious and concerning I am just saying I don’t think my son is in danger at Wake Forest.

@lbf then you’ve been misinformed because it happened on campus shortly after 1am. More red flags here

I was talking about the link to the 2016 incident, sorry I wasn’t clear. I know the incident this weekend was on campus and as a parent was I scared and concerned when I read it first thing when I woke up YES of course I was. I just don’t feel that Wake is unsafe because of one tragic incident. Now my son is only a freshman so I am going off of one semester of information. My son doesn’t feel unsafe so that is part of it as well.

Another serious crime against WFU students.

Odds are @homerdog your child won’t be going to many barn parties. Seeing as they are not frequently attended by a majority of Wake students. As someone in the thread said earlier, it was a party mainly thrown by WSSU, as most barn parties have been in the past. They have to get permission by the school to throw them, but (I believe) they are supposed to supply their own security. If a barn party is thrown by Wake students, the school requests them to hire security. However, this party was “hosted” by WSSU. Anyone could attend. All you had to do is buy a ticket online.

Wake Forest is a unique campus. It was moved into a historically area of its town and gentrified it. The area of Wake Forest is NOT representative of Winston-Salem, and most people don’t realize that. If you stay in the bubble, you’ll be fine. They make sure that students on campus are as safe as possible, but once you step out into the city, as any college city can be, it’s fair game.

@CarriesBakers looks to me like The Barn is on campus, just down a road from all of the other buildings. According to Wake’s website, lots of parties are hosted by Wake groups there. Why on earth would the university let another university’s students rent it out and also not have any security there? As for staying on campus, I had no idea that the town on Winston-Salem was unsafe. It is. It just like “anywhere else” if there are armed robberies or murders.
