I’m a junior hoping to apply to Wake Forest University ED, but I’m worried about a few student testimonial and comments I’ve read on this website and others. I’ve heard there’s a separation between minorities and white students. I’m also curious about what the social scene is. Are there fun, new opportunities and events on the weekends? How hard is it to get off campus? Is there a large “upper class” vibe around campus? I’d appreciate any answers to these questions or general words of wisdom from any Deacs.
I’m not a student, but a prospective junior.
I visited yesterday and did not notice anything of the sort. Everyone was super nice at Wake. Holding doors open for everyone and stuff like that. I did not get any of that preppy feel. Sure there were a couple groups of guys walking around being loud, but that can be found almost anywhere.
The school is trying very hard to diversify and be more “progressive”. I noticed this from some of the word choice used at the info session. Boasting of speakers such as Hillary and Michelle for coming on Campus. There is definitely a wide spectrum of beliefs at wake, not the rich conservative stereotype.
We recently heard a presentation at the school about Wake the Vote. It sounded fantastic. Many of the students were initially assigned to work for presidential candidates of the opposite party/opposite views. Later in the process students could work for the candidate of their choice. It seemed like a lot of great discussion among people with different views, which does not happen nearly enough today. The presentation was by Melissa Harris-Perry, executive director of the school’s Pro Humanitate Institute and formerly anchor of a show on MSNBC.
