Where are the nearest large shopping areas near BC? I am interested specifically in discount stores like Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond for buying stuff for my son’s dorm room. (We live out West and will have to buy everything locally.) Also, are Staples/OfficeMax, Home Depot/Lowe’s, and/or Best Buy nearby?

Yes, all of those stores are close by. The choice of shopping center will rely on whether you choose to rent a car or just use the public transport system and taxis.
If you are relying on the T and Taxis, I would try: The BB&B, Home Depot and Staples at the Landmark Center (Kenmore Square or Fenway Stop). Then, if you still need Target and Home Depot- take a cab to the one in Watertown (about a $10 cab ride from BC).

If, however, you are renting a car, I would advise you to drive as little in Boston as possible if you are not familiar with driving in East Coast cities. I suggest going to out to Shoppers World in Framingham. There you will find every big box store and chain restaurant that you could possibly imagine. Get there by taking Boyleston Street (Route 9) West for about twenty minutes and the complex is on your left hand side. To get to Boyleston Street from campus:
From Upper: Follow Hammond Street and cross Beacon Street. Boyleston will be your first light. Make a right.

From Newton Campus: Make a right on Center Street. Cross Comm. Ave and continue through the town of Newton Centre. About a half mile past the town, you will have a stop light from where you can see an overpass. Before going under the overpass, bear right and take the ramp up onto Rt. 9. Follow for 15 minutes. Shopping center will be on your right.

Thanks so much for your help!
