Shopping furniture

Few of my friends and I have rented an apartment near our college. It is not furnished. So we have to buy some essential furniture before moving in. One of my friends suggested we’ll get the furniture from a [surplus furniture store](https://www.surplusfurniture.com/edmonton/) as it will be more affordable. Others are saying we’ll get it from the used furniture store. I need an opinion on the same from here. What would you do if you were in our position?

You can try either option, surplus or used may have similar deals. You can also try Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Walmart, Target, or even Amazon, for inexpensive options. Parent’s or other relative’s basements or garages may offer some usable things too.

Moving furniture can cost more than the actual furniture so try to buy it locally. See if other students are getting rid or/selling furniture.

What we did: Bought from garage sales, scratch and dent section of furniture store, ikea, furniture from relatives basement

@bopper - this. You don’t need to recreate Pottery Barn. Scout out free first (parents/family), then super cheap (other students/garage sales/thrift stores), then the dinged/castoffs from the Ikea’s, etc. Make a comprehensive list of what you need, measure rooms out beforehand (no use bringing home a piece of furniture you cannot fit into your place, even if it’s free) and go. If you have to get rid of it upon move-out, list it for locals to buy. The beauty of Facebook and Craigslist.

For the first apartment we got pretty inexpensive furniture. A metal platform that folds up for easy moving and a mattress in a box.

You could see if the school has a sale at the end of the school year of unwanted furniture.

If you know senior students, see if they are planning on taking their furniture with them after graduation.

See if there is a message board with student for sale ads.

Our best bets were local craig’s list near school’s end. Lots of people don’t want to move anything. They’ll give it cheap or even free if you can haul it in some way.

My daughter and her roommates got furniture off of Craig’s List, some of it free. Just be careful about mice, lice, etc. The furniture they found was from an older couple that were downsizing and was in good shape.

It depend on your financial status.if your status week you should use for used furniture.

Check to see if your school has a facebook group where students can buy and sell stuff. Usually students moving out don’t want to put things in storage and are looking to get rid of furniture. Great way to find things that are low cost and free.

Yard sales, begging parents and their friends, , local classifieds, charity shops. Unless you have a trust fund, avoid any kid of furniture store, period.

NextDoor often has cheap or free furniture offers.
