My S is attends SEAS Iat UVA. He is currently enrolled for 14 cr for Fall 2011. The required minimum credit hours is 16. If he takes 3cr during the summer, will that counts towards the Fall so he doesn't have to take such a heavy course load?

Does anyone no any good 1 credit courses, other than PE courses? All of the ones he likes are closed.

I had a son who was 1 credit short of junior standing after his sophomore year. He needed the credit to both get on track for a 4 year graduation and to have the junior standing for some majors classes. He was staying in the college town for that summer. His college has some summer enrichment type classes that either meet either once a week for x weeks or for a long weekend. The classes are open to the public but enrolled students can pick them up for one credit. He took a class he really didn’t “like” but for a credit he didn’t really care much. Check what the costs will be for your student to take one summer class, too. My son looked into that and it was quite abit more expensive than taking a for-credit summer enrichment class. He should schedule time with his advisor also ASAP to talk about how to make all of this work. Is he absolutely certain he needs that 1 credit right now??? In other words can he catch up that one credit in the fall and get the classes he wants/needs in the spring?

helicoptermom2,
Are you asking if 3 credits in the summer will allow him to go below minimum semester requirements in the fall?
Are the minimum credits a recommendation for ontime graduation, or an actual requirement for remaining in SEAS or an honor status?

This is from the undergraduate engineering student handbook:

Course Load Requirement “15 hour rule”
Every student is expected to take a minimum of 15 graded credit hours of course-work each semester. Students must secure the permission of their advisor and the Dean’s office to register for fewer than 15 graded hours. Petitions are available in Thornton Hall A-122. NO courses taken on an Audit of Credit/No Credit basis can satisfy any degree requirement in the SEAS, nor can they satisfy the “15-hour minimum” rule.

An overload of 19 or 20 hours of course-work per semester can be approved by the advisor for students with cumulative GPAs exceeding 3.0. Course loads greater than 20 hours require Dean’s office approval.

It is pretty hard for anyone (even someone at the same university) to suggest a course without knowing what he has already taken, what major he is in, and what the 14 credits he currently has are (some courses can be much more workload than others of the same credits; if he has mostly “light” workload courses, then taking a larger number of credits can be reasonable).

A general suggestion would be to look for an open course which satisfies some breadth requirement if he has not completely fulfilled them, since there is often a fairly large list of courses that can be used. But it is hard to get more specific beyond that.

I would imagine that it would not be a big deal to get the Advisor and Dean sign-off if he will be on course for the degree and if he is taking a summer course (maybe even if not). This is just my 2 cents based on general experience elsewhere, not at UVA in Engineering. Why doesn’t he just ask? My S in ECE at a different top school had several terms of higher loads (18±), but other terms lower than 15 credits.

helicoptermom2: if you should ask your question at the UVA forum you may get more responses. What year is your son? Have him to talk to upperclassman, they seemed to know how to get into some of the classes already full. Over heard S2 complaining being wait listed in some of the classes last fall. S1 told not to worry and S2 did get into the class later. Did not pay attention to what was said.

If he has not completed all the science requirement, may be he can take the lab first. If he plans to take summer class not at UVA, make sure the class is acceptable to UVA so he can transfer the credit. I think my S mentioned once that a requirement class for the major has to be taken at UVA.

If he’s interested in this kind of thing, the Drama department has Technology Labs in Sound, Lights, Scene, Props and Costume. I imagine Sound and Light might be more up his street than the others, as an Engineer, but…

Thanks dreaming92! The sounds and light lab sounds interesting. My S did enjoy drama in middle school, but did not have a chance to pursue it in hs because of debate and sports. This may be the fun and relaxing class he needs. ; )

Thanks mominva! I was searching for that info. My S is taking chemistry during the summer. In the fall he has Multivariable Calc, Discrete Math, Physics II & Lab, and a Science elective. I just didn’t want he to get to overwhelmed with another difficult and time consuming class. With the summer class, he should be okay.

Ha, tell him to get chummy with his advisors…they can be a lifering in navigating college…no matter what college you are at! I recommend at least 2 visits per semester to my kids. If he doesn’t “like” his advisor it’s generally pretty simple to change.

Did the advisor lift the hold without having a plan for a full courseload? D needs to meet with her advisor (SEAS), formulate a plan for 15 credits (minimum), and then the advisor lifts the hold so she can enroll. Is he a CS major?

My D is SEAS at UVA but so far following what she needs to take has always been between the 15-17 credit hours and has the same for the fall. I would think though by taking the summer class he will still be on track to complete all the classes he needs for the major, I think the main focus is that all students graduate in 4 years so they have it based on that but by taking a class in the summer he won’t be behind. What year is he though, the only one I can see potentially being a road block is the MV Calc as most of the SEAS students have done that by/in 1st year. Also, not knowing what year he is, has he been fitting in his humantities electives?
