Short/Long Passages strategy

How do you guys go about with the passages on the new SAT?
I've been reading the 1st question, then reading the passage until I get to the part mentioned in the question, answer the question, read the next question, and repeat.
So far my reading practice scores have ranged from mid-600s to lower 700s.
I'm somewhat reluctant to write on the passages themselves and outline it because i think I can remember it, but the bigger concern is to leave the book in fairly new condition.

Does writing on the passage help? should I photocopy the passages before beggining?

Any tips on tackling passagea?

Writing on the passages can help. You could write a little blurb of the paragraph so you will know where to go if you find a question concerning it.

Also, for short passages, I read the questions first and then read.

For long passages, I read first and then answer the questions.

But, if you are in the mid-600 to low 700 range, I think you just need to paractice more.
