I'm hoping to transfer from community college. I'm majoring in computer science, would it be useless to ask my psychology professor for a letter of recommendation? Should I be asking my math/physics/computer professors instead? Or is there not really a difference?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm a freshman at a community college, and I am taking my second semester with the same psychology teacher who admires my overall performance and contribution toward the subject. I get to class early, so sometimes we talk too, so we kind of have a bond. That's why I think she would write a great letter of rec for me

Do you only get one letter of recommendation, or can you do several?

I’m a physics major, but I also love sociology/anthropology. I had a letter of recommendation written by the physics professor I’ve had for the last three semesters (have him for one more still), and I had a second letter written by the sociology/anthropology professor that I had for three semesters straight. Ideally letters should come from your major, but your application isn’t likely to be seen as weaker due to getting a letter from outside of your major. I like having one from both in and out of my major. It shows broader interests.

Note also that most college transfer applications in my experience don’t even require letters of recommendation. The letters I mentioned were for a summer internship, and not transfer applications.
