Should he even apply?

My son is thinking of applying to UT. I don't want to be negative, but I wonder if it is even worth a shot. I know admit rate is about 45%.

SAT: CR-520, Math-620, Writing-600
Class Rank: 22%
ECs: lots of time invested in his sport, not much else.

We live in Texas, so I think he has always known of UT, but lately he has a desire to attend.

It’s always worth apply, if it’s a school you want.
Just about nothing worst than to go through life with a regret, always thinking, “what if” or “if only…”
From my understanding the stats are low, but not the lowest and definitely not a 100% decline. So just tell him to give it his all on the two essays, get some recommendation letters, etc and just hope for the best.

If its the application fee that’s giving you or your son grief, there is always the waiver[/url”>http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/services/pay/appfee]waiver. Other than that, there isn’t much to lose by applying.

Thank you. You make a good point about regret or “what if’s.”

You’re welcome
Good luck to your son!

The only kids that have no shot at UT are those that don’t apply. With ApplyTexas, there is no reason not too (except the fee, but if that is an issue the wavier was brought up earlier)

Even if he isn’t admitted, he can always get CAP then attend UT the next year as long as he finishes 30 hours at any other UT school :)

^CAP only applies to the College of Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, though.

Ask your son to write great essays and embellish his extracurriculars (this doesn’t mean lie, but it means that he should word them to seem even more impressive and sort of toot his own horn). He should have a high school athletic coach and a teacher that really likes him as a students write him recommendation letters and submit those 2 as supplements. Ask him to give his best shot because you never know unless he tries his best to get in and turn in the best application possible!
