Should high school start later than 8?

My school starts 8:35 and ends 2:40, but if you take “H period” (A to G period runs during the day) the day starts at 7:45. This year I’m doing US history H period, and next year will be AP Psych

I’m fine, though, with the time my school starts/ends. The thing I hate is the alternating cycle days. There are 6 periods per day and 1 ‘drops out’. The one that drops out, the next day will be the ‘hour period’ the next. There are 7 days in a cycle with random orders of periods each day.

8:35 to 2:40…■■■■, I’d kill for a day that short.

My school district is thinking about moving the schedule an hour down, so school would start at 8:45 (8:20 for zero period). Needless to say, many people are against this move.

Studies have shown that schools with later start times have much lower rates of tardiness and truancy. The students also tend to have decreased rates of depression and increased academic achievement. Mosts scientists that study sleep and circadian rhythms believe that a school day starting closer to 11 would be ideal for young kids, while between 9 and 10 or so is the sweet spot for teens.

I start at 7:45 and end at 2:40…

So, one hour back/forward:

8:45 - 3:40 …nope…
6:45 - 1:40 …double nope…

I’ll stick with the 7:45 - 2:40.

I take zero period so I don’t even get the benefit of being in early (7:30) and leaving early. It’s 3:30/4:30 let outs, depending on if it’s a Lab day(Tuesday).

8:35 AM - 3:05 PM.

Believe me, it doesn’t make much of a difference mostly b/c most of our classes (AP classes, JROTC specifically) start early usually around ~7:10 AM every day.

But it’s A LOT better now after the APs. I got 2 extra hours of sleep last night :)

The base schedule at my school is 8:10 - 2:38, for 8 periods, most days (2pm on Wednesday for meetings, and 2:50pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a part of the year to allow our JROTC program to practice for their inspection).

However, my schedule allowed me to leave by 2pm 2-3 times a week. So it worked out nice, and I had plenty of time to balance school and outside activities.

i WISH my school started at 8. it starts at 7:30 and ends at 2:33 for me. our “early” or “minimum” days are on monday, but, instead of decreasing time at the end of the school day, they decrease it at the beginning so it’s 9:00 to 2:33.

In by 12:00, out by 12:01, with every day being minimum day.

My elementary school was 7:45 to 1:45.
My high school is (in two days it’ll be “was,” OMG!) 7:30 to 2:30.

Getting up early is okay, but it was so nice last year when I had first bell study hall and didn’t come in until 8:20. However, I wouldn’t want to get out later.

My high school starts at 7:18. :D

Up by 5:45, 6:30 bus, at school by 7. But I’m moving, so I have to wake up 15-30 minutes earlier.

Wow, mind seems to end the latest.

8:45 - 4:15.

It’s the 15 min that kill me. I still can’t wake up well, luckily my 1st is a slacker class, sometimes I can sleep in even later if I remember to text someone to sign me in.

And yeah, the sports last till 7 or 8. That does suck, but usually practices are 8th and they get more time. But I’ve been a trainer and it takes the guy all of 8th period to just get ready and out on the field. Then again, our teams usually suck.

I usually get home around 5-6? During drama practices around later 7pm.

My school starts at 8, but I have a sleep-in every day, so I don’t have class until 8:50. Before this year I would have said that I don’t see the point in moving it back because people will just go to sleep later, but I think my extra 50 minutes actually really makes a difference.

My middle school started a little bit past nine, and we got out a little after four. It was horrible and this year(high school) we start/end an hour earlier. I wouldn’t go back for anything.

My middle school was 9-3:30… which was AMAZING.

High school is 8:20-3:30… but with so many extra curriculars, sometimes I can find myself staying from 7am to 7 pm or later.

8:25-3:40. + 40 minute bus ride. I live 5ish miles away…

At least I am driving next year. Thx da lordd

School should start at 9, end at 12, and we should go later into the year.

My high school started at 7:12 and got out at 2:10.

No, our circadian rhythms aren’t meant to get up after 8. Naturally, we are supposed to get up at dawn and go to bed at sunset. Even if you want to go with sunrise, the sun where I live rises at around 6:15. Plenty of time to get ready for school by 7.

I will echo the sentiments that late starts suck because you get out really late. This messes with ECs- sports in particular. Plus, it just plain sucks.

As much as I love your sn (A Wrinkle in Time FTW) I have to strongly disagree with you. We would need to go at least year-round in order to make any kind of 3 hour a day schooling work. We’d probably have to have 6 or even 7 day weeks. No way it would work.

EDIT:
FWIW, I started all my college classes at 10:20 or later last semester. Even that seemed too early because I wouldn’t go to sleep at any kind of decent hour. I had class or work until at least 5ish every day. Just go to bed earlier if you need more sleep.

Yeah I don’t know what you guys are talking about, I work better in the morning. But yeah, school 10 am -11 am ftw. I learn better on my own anyways.
