Should I Apply? (and maybe leave Northwestern)

I just finished my freshman year at NU and it took me awhile but I did enjoy it by the end. My concern is that the premedical program at NU is more concerned with weeding students out than teaching and I don't know that it is the best place to remain for the remainder of my undergrad years.

I thought about transferring earlier in the year but had decided against it when I decided to drop the premed track after winter quarter. I recently decided I wanted to go back to being premed, and I was wondering if I should look at transferring as a possibility.

The problem is that I like NU and I've made friends, but I really was miserable when I was premed here. I don't know that I would want to leave, but I don't want to be stuck in a bad academic situation either. But then again, that might be the same everywhere, and I just don't know. My gpa so far in college is 3.954 and I think that I could get some good recs. I had an ACT of 33.

The only schools I would really want to leave NU for would be Dartmouth, Yale, or Stanford.

Is it worth the time and money to spend on transfer apps if I'm not sure, or should I make the best of NU and deal with the academic problems that do exist (it still is a great academic school)?

Don't get fooled into thinking that the premed classes are going to be different at those schools. Didn't you know how competitive those classes were going to be from the beginning? You've got a good shot with that awesome gpa but I really don't see why you would want to leave when you've made friends and seem to like it there overall.

You do not want to be a transfer student at any school if you got along fine at your previous one, your going to feel like an outsider almost no matter what and I just don't think it's worth it.

You're doing really well at Northwestern and it seems as if you are happy there -- it'd be a shame to see you leave such a great school. I think this is more of an issue of you doing pre-med. It might not be any better at any of the other schools. I say stick with it!

jgd661,

I know NU's orgo is notoriously difficult but I don't think you have to take orgo at NU for med school admission. Just because NU doesn't count orgo credits from anywhere toward graduation doesn't mean they won't be counted for Med school admission (please confirm that yourself and discuss with the premed advisor at NU). If you are insecure about how med schools may think, just don't take it in some no-name community college. I was told in the past when NU allowed orgo credits from Harvard, students that took it there said it's easier. So you may consider that cos med school would definitely respect the grades from Harvard.

Lol Sam is spot on. My friend had this same issue at Cornell. He took summer classes (orgo) at Ohio State and ended up getting into a top 10 med school.

it doesn't hurt to apply

thanks everyone cc people always seem to have good advice.
