I plan on going to a local college for my first year to get acclimated to college life with a bit more of a safety net (and to get some of my generals out of the way for a lesser price) and then transferring to a college that is quite far away the following year.

My question is, should I apply to the college I plan on transferring to along with the college I'll be attending first or should I hold off on applying to my transfer school until after my first year?

Why would you apply to the school you want to transfer to now when you’re not planning to go there yet?
Just go to the local college and then apply after because that’s what you want to do…

Why would you respond to a prospective college student who merely wants to be informed before making a decision with such derision? Just answer the question in a respectful manner and understand that people come to this forum to ask questions about college…

I don’t think it would hurt to apply to both schools. While you’re in the process of applying however, I would just indicate on the applications that you would like to receive financial aid if you’re eligible. Wait until you’ve received each school’s decision, and check if you’ve qualified for financial aid from either one. If money is the main factor in your decision-making process right now, I think it’s worth waiting and seeing what kind of financial aid package your prospective transfer school will be willing to offer you, assuming you’ll be accepted. If you’re admitted to the prospective transfer school but they’re not offering “enough” financial aid, then I would go ahead and just attend the local college for now. There’s no harm done in applying to both schools though. If I was in your current position, I’d want to be aware of all my options.

Side note: if you’re just wanting to get acclimated to college life at your local school, won’t you have to get acclimated AGAIN once you’ve transferred to the farther school? Just wanted to point that out…
