I was very nervous when I started filling out my college application. Someone told me you have a better chance of getting in if I was not applying for financial aid. Since I was sure I wouldn't get in and wanted to do anything I could to increase my chance, I chose "No" when it asked me if I would be applying for financial aid.

Long story short, I actually got in. I don't really need money for college, since I'm one of the very fortunate few whose parents have agreed to pay for their first year. However, I'd like to take whatever I can off my parent's shoulders. According to the website I can still apply with the FAFSA even though the deadline passed. I'm wondering, though, if I can still apply if I checked "No" for that question. Will my acceptance be rescinded?

go ahead and apply -- you won't get rescinded. it is unlikely that you will get anything other than loans, but it is worth a shot. Even some work/study money would help.

Next year, make sure to apply by the priority date for the maximum FA award.

Also -- by applying this year, you might have the chance to go into the FA office and see what your next year package might be if you turn it in early -- you said your parents agreed to pay for your first year, but what are you doing for the other 3 years? If you parents can pay for year one, it is likely that the school will also expect them to pay for all or most of the other three years.

If it's a school that meets 100% of need you should be able to get aid next year if you have need. But if your parents will only pay for one year, check this with your school and run the calculators (FAFSA and profile if they use) to make sure the school will see you as having need. Most people think they need more than schools think they need.

give it a try, i would. the worst thing they can say is 'no', you won't get rescinded, but if you didn't you'd probably ask youself all the time whether you could have also received financial aid. good luck! =D

I am not sure what school you're going to attend, but in the Financial Aid meetiong at accepted students weekend at Tufts two weeks ago, the Fin. Aid director told parents - if you haven't applied for financial aid, it's too late now. The money has already been distributed.

My neighbor heard the same from Northwestern. My gut says if the deadline was X, then after the deadline it will be a long shot. I doubt you'll get rescinded, but they may ask you why you've changed your mind, and you may need a reason such as a recent job layoff.
