So the thread kind of faded away, but my fafsa says I have a 96k EFC. Should I even bother applying? My dad says he'll probably leave his job within the next year, so I'll need to apply next year or my junior year. People have told me it's hard to get aid later on if you don't apply freshman year...

So should I call and tell them I'm no longer applying?

Before you say no, make sure that you know the financial aid policies at the schools that you are interested in attending. You are right, depending on the school, if you don't apply freshman year, you may not be eligible or it could be hard to get aid in subsequent years. In addition, some schools require that you atleast file the fafsa in order to be considered for merit money.

Personally, I would never "not apply" but apply and let them tell you that you are not eligible because life happens. In the off chance that you have a major financial change in circumstances, it is easier to explain your situation and get a financial review that to try to apply for aid mid year.
