Are there advantages/disadvantages to either? Can you do both?

If you still have time, there’s no reason not to do it this year. You can re-apply next year if you don’t get in; I don’t know of any school that holds a previously declined app against you.

In order to make a realistic recommendation on when you should apply for a transfer, a lot more information is needed, such as: what year you’re currently in, HS & college stats (gpa, test scores), where you attend, where you’re applying, financial situation, reason for transferring, etc.

HS GPA: 3.63
College GPA: 3.7
Freshman at Washington University in St. Louis
My main reason for transfer is because of my major. I’m looking to apply to a school with a very good Physics Program (looking to major in Physics and Philosophy)

Right now I’m sending an app to Stanford (due March 15). Unfortunately, I missed MIT’s deadline. Yale and UChicago were other schools I was considering–however, their apps are due March 1. I’ve only recently contacted my professors for letters of rec, and I’m afraid March 1 would be too close of a deadline for them.

Any advice? Wait for next year then do everything in a much more organized fashion? Just focus on Stanford? Or try to push for Yale and UChicago anyway?

If Stanford is your top choice anyway, you should focus on it. However, if you’re really looking into the other schools on your list, then wait until the Fall to apply as a Spring transfer. You still have time! Just make sure to keep your grades up! :)
