Should I Apply To UCs?

I'm considering applying to UCLA and UC Berkeley OOS. Neither are even close to the top of my list in preference, but since they only have one application date, I don't know what to do. I'm applying to two schools EA; I have a decent chance at at least 1 of them as they are both ranked slightly lower than UCLA and Cal. But I would choose either of those over either UC.

Paying for the app. isn't really an issue, but I'd rather not throw out the money and spend my time on the essays if it's a waste, especially if I wouldn't get in (not sure how hard it is to get in OOS). However, the real reason I am attracted to the UCs is because I messed up my freshman year and since they don't count freshman year I think it might be a good saving grace lol. Also, if I didn't get into either of my EA schools then I'd be pretty regretful that I didn't apply to the UCs. So with this all in mind, what do you guys think I should do? (3.7 UW/3.9 UC GPA and 33 ACT)

Can you afford the out of state tuition?

You don’t sound at all excited about either UCLA or Berkeley. You say they aren’t even close to the top of your list. I’m a bit confused. Are you also applying to other schools higher on your list and wondering if you should add the UCs? Why not focus on those other schools higher on your list?

FWIW, your ACT is in range for those schools but your GPA is a bit low. They’re a reach and they’re expensive for OOSers. If you’re not excited about them I wonder why you would apply.

Yes, I can afford them. Financial aid isn’t needed.

I’m applying to 1-3 other “reach” schools higher than the UCs (not expecting an acceptance). Is a 3.9 actually a low UC GPA? Because then that might change things. If I didn’t get into either EA school then I would seriously consider these UCs (if admitted), but you’re right, I’m not excited about them (they are across the country and the lack of diversity is slightly unappealing to me). I’m just nervous about how much my 3.7 will affect me at other schools I apply to, so I figured applying to at least 2 schools where I have a 3.9 might help.

It’s low for those two particular UCs but not for the others, with the possible exception of San Diego.

Given your lack of excitement about them, can you find some matches and safeties in your geographical vicinity? (given that geography also seems important to you)

Your scores are very good and I bet you can find some great schools that you love.
