I would only apply if there was a good chance that I got a great deal of merit aid.

I'm OOS, Engineering, 2170 SAT, 3.9 GPA UW, 4.7 W, AP scholar w/ distinction, IB diploma, average ECs.

I received a letter about the Department of Materials Science and Engineering Scholarship Application. I am open to going into this field but I was wondering how big the scholarship was and how likely I would get it.

I think you could probably get enough merit where out of state tuition could equal in-state, but you also should look for other scholarships that are not funded by the school.

UIUC gives very little merit aid to in state or out of state students. You can sometimes find departmental scholarships if you are very high up there in stats, but they are scarce. Might have to look to third party scholarships.

If you really want to go to UIUC, I would recommend calling the engineering department and letting them know that you’ll need some aid to attend and see whether they can help you out. If you don’t want to do that, like everyone said, you’ll probably have to look for some outside scholarships to get a big chunk of money. Good luck.

Recently attended the Materials Science/Engineering Open House. Merit scholarships in the range of $500 to $2500 per year were mentioned. Not a whole lot of money from the school, I would recommend looking to outside scholarship sources. It may take some time and work, but 5 or 6 $1000 scholarships make a pretty good dent.
