Hey everyone, I am a prospective transfer student trying to get some pre-reqs done for the Computer Science major. My community college doesn't offer many of the undergrad CSE classes, so I was wondering if I should go as a visiting student this summer to UCSD to fill some of them out. Is this a good idea? How much money is it going to cost (EFC ~10k)? and maybe what classes should I try to enroll in? If so, are waitlists a problem because it has been extremely hard getting into classes at my school.

UCSD looks like an amazing school and I hope to be joining you all Fall 2011 :)

I am planning to take Math 20E over the summer so that I can jump right in to upper-div courses this Fall, and as a “visiting student” (that status applies even to admits for Fall 2010) I estimated that it will cost me a little under $1.5K.

Here’s the breakdown as I figured it:
Application fee: $50 (for visiting students)
Course fee: $286/unit x 4 (Math 20E is a 4 unit course) = $1144.
University Center Fee: $38.25/session
Recreation Facility Fee: $46/session
ICA Student Activity Fee: $59.23/session (undergraduates only)

Textbook: ~ $100 (a guess, but I bet it’s close)

Total: $1437.48

Add to the above if your class has materials fees. It will cost you slightly more ($50) for the application fee as a non-UC student.

I took a class last summer before I transfered at UCSD, and it only cost me $8XX. I didn’t pay any of those fees, only for the class. It’s expensive but I think it’s worth it as it helped transitioning from CC to UCSD. I got to get more familiar with the campus and the difference in workload.

Thank you, jamesinho, for the detailed response. I was just wondering if you included housing/living expenses or are you living at home? Also, is that including the deduction from financial aid? If its probably like ~3k or less ill attend; mainly for the experience.

@jrmorse how did it only cost you 800 dollars? A four unit course includes course fee, application fee, and textbook which should be more than that. Did you have financial aid because that’s like nothing that I’ve read on UCSD’s website?

@YouSeeEssDee: I didn’t include living expenses in my estimate, because those are expenses incurred regardless of whether or not I take the class. I just wanted to know how much the class itself would hit my wallet. That said, I’m looking to hopefully save a bit on rent. I’m a married student (w/ kids) so we are looking to move on-campus into the Mesas and drop to ~$400/mo less than what we are paying now (a crappy apt. in UTC).

hmm i kind of want to go down and take my calc class at ucsd’s summer session… i wonder if there is truth to that 800$ for summer session from fasfa… wonder if they would pay living expenses too.

@ajdavidson07: It’s definitely worth a shot at checking it out. I didn’t consider finaid in my calculations because (for me) it’s a huge unknown. I filed a FAFSA for UCSD but don’t know what the award is yet. If finaid > $0 then obviously the numbers look increasingly less horrible. I would imagine living expenses being covered depends on the finaid package.

Do you live in (or are moving to) the Village? Those are supposed to be really nice.

yeah im def doing the village at least for my first year, especially cuz i got aid to cover it all. the only real downside to it anyways is the cost so with that out of the equation im golden.

its just if i would get aid for the few months during summer is the question

Where can I get more info on off-campus housing? I tried UCSD’s website, but it required a PID. The latest information that I could find was for 2006 apartment prices, so its probably not accurate. How much do you guys think that I can save because if I am going to summer session, then it might not be worth the work from shopping for an apartment?
