Should I be nervous about getting in?

I am currently a senior from in-state. I applied to CSE and carlson as a back up. My act scores were really low, 25. But I wasn’t too nervous since they said they accepted ranges from 24-27 also. I have a really strong GPA 3.93 for high school but I am also doing full-time pseo at st cloud state university with a GPA of 3.70. I have extracurricular activities that demonstrate my involvement in my local community as well as the community at scsu. I applied mid sept but havent heard back. I was wondering if I have a decent chance of being admit, even if its to cla. My sister goes there and has spoken to heads of the university and told them about me. They were impressed I was a full-time pseo, not that that would change anything. Thank you!

The ACT range for the middle 50% of students for CSE is 30-33

IvyGreekLife is right. I’m going to be blunt, but honest. Your GPA is great, but your ACT is way below the 30-33 for the middle 50 percentile. Here is the academic profile from their website if you don’t believe me.

Unfortunately, the U of MN uses numbers like GPA and ACT primarily for admissions and focuses less on miscellaneous items (the reason they don’t require essays). If you are set on engineering, I bet you could easily get into Liberal Arts and transfer second year. That’s the route I’d take. Apply Liberal Arts as secondary choice and get a high GPA in college and transfer. Good luck.

Thank you for your honesty. I appreciate it. I guess we will see what happens. I mean if i dont get into cse idk what id do bc i have all my lib arts done and most of the prereqs done for eng (gen chem 1&2, calc 1&2, physics) and I dont think id want to take a year off. but again thank you so much

You need a couple more schools you know you will get into. How about UM-Duluth?

@huskiesgophers2 I’m thinking that if you get into CLA, those pre-reqs might set you up nicely for a something like a chemistry, physics or math major. You can also apply to transfer to CSE once you are have a year or so under your belt.

@intparent is correct in recommending that you look into other schools in the event that it doesn’t work out with UMTC. But it is possible that your strong PSEO will compensate for the low ACT. That happened with at least one other poster on this forum a few weeks ago. Check it out: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-minnesota-twin-cities/1823211-i-got-in.html#latest

@Mamelot I hope that happens with me as well! I have looks at other schools as well. I am not sure what to do but I am now even cosidering staying at scsu since I’ll be done with undergrad at 20 yrs old with no debt. If i did go to the U id graduate in the next three years. I will let everyone know what happens, but thank you so much for your replies.

well good luck to you @huskiesgophers2 and definitely keep us informed!

EVERYONE I GOT IN! so I guess low ACT scores don’t matter much when you’re already taking university classes and getting A’s in all of them.

@mamelot @intparent @universitygeek @ivygreeklife

Congratulations!!! Are you in CSE? I hope you will decide to attend, UMN is a great school.

@intparent yes I got into CSE! I am waiting to hear from other schools but definitely UMN is top choice! I have liked being at SCSU and even got offered a TA position so also deciding if I just want to stay at SCSU. It’s tough but I know whatever I decide will be the best for me!

UMN is definitely a step up from SCSU. Classes will be harder, but you will honestly get a better education at UMN.

Congratulations. Your PSEO efforts seemed to have made a difference.

You are right! UMN is def the best and will be harder, not only the classes but building new relationships with students/professors since I have already made great connections with the students and faculty at SCSU! Thank you for your words!

Congrats, @huskiesgophers2! Well done!!

Congrats!

Congrats! I guess I was wrong
