Okay, so I see many people who have extremely good GPA but not the best SAT scores in other chance me threads for CSE. Could someone give me insight on my chances who has a low unweighted GPA of 3.30(bc I attend a really competitive school and I made some bad choices of taking all the hardest classes at my school) but has a relatively high SAT score of 1470(1510 super scored)? My sophomore year was disastrous and that’s bringing down my overall GPA but in junior year I improved a lot while still taking some of the hardest classes.
Overall, I know GPA is the main thing that’s pulling me down but I know everything else(ECs, other test scores) are more than enough for me to be a competitive applicant. If I do not get into CSE, do I have any chances for CS in college of liberal arts and sciences?
Any advice is welcome. Thanks!
Btw I am OOS applicant.
The average act for CSE students are 31-34 and if you are in the upper percentile then I think you are fine, maybe take the ACT once and see how that goes, and in the additional information section of the application you can tell the UMN admissions team why your gpa is low and then they will think further about your decision. But if everything else is good for you then I do not see a problem with your acceptance, you will get into CLA no problem
OP not sure if you’ve noticed this comment in the other threads but UMN doesn’t superscore. They use your highest composite. A 1470 is fine for CSE (they accept SAT’s so no need to be taking the ACT right now); your grades are going to be a potential obstacle for admission to CSE. You are up against other applicants with solid A’s and A+'s and lots of AP or dual enrollment. And EVERYONE attends a competitive high school Your test scores are very important but your overall academic performance is critical (UMN is, after all, an academic institution).
Ditto the advice about providing a personal statement explaining why things are different going forward. You might also get your counselor or a teacher send a letter attesting to your academic abilities.
Your chances of getting into CLA are significantly better, and your over-the-top test score for that college should compensate somewhat for the low(er) GPA. Not sure it’s a given, however, that you’ll be admitted and it’s quite possible that if you applied early you could be deferred to regular just so they have a chance to view your stats against new apps. coming in. So do prepare for a bit of a wait, just in case that happens.
CS in CLA has the same overall major requirements as it does through CSE; it’s possible to supplement your major with extra math and science in order to emulate something similar to the BS through CSE. CLA just gives you the option to double major or take a wide variety of electives (these aren’t generally possible through CSE).
Good luck to you and be sure to post when you hear back!
Okay I’m going to tell you the truth. For the UMN at least, a higher GPA is more important than your testing score. Now I know that your score is well within their range, but your GPA is below it. You for sure will get into CLA since they accept a lot of people with similar stats to yours, but CSE is going to depend on how well you wrote your essays, your class schedules/rigor that may have affected your GPA, and activities. I got in with a 28 act and a 3.95 gpa UW, so it really depends on the other factors. Now if you feel that those other factors were strong, I would say you have a good chance! Wishing you the best
Thank you all for your responses! I ended up getting deferred
@KamandaLobomo - boo! Thanks for letting us know. Do you have other options?
As of now, I only have been accepted into Rutgers University. Every other school I applied early into has deferred me.
I also applied for CSE like you and get deferred. I am international student and my test score is not as high as you just 1300 with 750 in math, my unweighted gpa after one semester in here is 4.85. It’s weird when you said all other school you apply early deferred you because your score is not low, I think it’s just because you chose to apply school which is so high and it’s why they put you in the wait list because you are average to them. I think it’s good if you can switch to CLA and make sure you know UMN does not super score in SAT or ACT so the score they are looking at yours is 1470. I am wondering can we update mid year grade on SRAR? Because they told me on website that it’s not necessary too update it because they have all what they need already. So now good luck to you on March!!!
