Should I be worried?

This is going to be slightly long...

So, basically I'm taking some pretty tough classes this year. In my opinion, I wasn't too strong of an applicant, but since I was admitted early, I guess UMich didn't think that. I had a 4.0 my first semester, and all was well.

Onto this semester...

We just got our midterm grades back. I have 3 A's, 1 A- (can bring up to an A) and a B-...

The B-, is in Calculus II. The teacher included a ... class grade, which basically was the breakup of the class grades.

From the start of Calc 2, 2/3 of the kids dropped the class.
There are 28 people left in there.

14 of them are failing, (D-/F)
14 of us have C- or above.

The highest grade in the class is an A-, followed by a B (lol no B+), 2 B-'s, then rest C's.

Should I be worried that my admissions might be revoked for this grade if it appeared on my final transcript? The lowest I could see myself get is a C, which is very possible at the moment. What brought about this worry was the last quiz that we just took. I was talking to the teachers, and as I watched some kids turn in the quizzes, I swear there was easily at least 10 different answers, and I only saw about 20 kids turn in quizzes before I left.

I'm confident in my math skills, but not so confident that I don't worry. I'm going to spend the entire spring break (yay spring break now) studying for Calculus 2 test and basically devote all of my time to bring up the A-, and the B-.

I know, I'll try and keep my grades up, but Calculus 2 is just killing me. Originally I was taking the class to show that I could take very hard classes (5 of them) and succeed at it, but this is... really smacking my GPA.

Any advice if I get a lower grade (B - C range)? Should I mention that even though this is a bad grade, it is better than most of my peers (is that even a justified excuse?)

My lowest possible total GPA is a 3.66 which is pretty low IMO, while the highest is 3.88

um...i think unless u get Ds or Fs..there's no chance whatsoever you get revoked..think about all the highschool seniors with senioritis :)

you're fine

Michigan sent a letter to my school regarding senioritis. The leader talks about how serious they are about checking up and making sure that you are doing well and everything. They then conclude the letter by saying that they had to revoke a whole 25 offers of admission last year. I was just saying to myself, wow only 25 out of 12000, they must be really serious about this. The point is dont worry too much, if your a strong student you have nothign to worry about.

wow, I guess like... those students must have done REALLY bad or something...

ugh I hope I'm not gonna be part of that statistic >_>

I wouldn't worry about it. A UM admissions person told us that unless you get 4 Cs, a D, or an E in a semester, they will not review your application again.

Well, a admissions rep told me "just dont get a C."

hm, I'm 50/50 right now on the C. I know I can improve, but the class is just... purely tough. I guess if I put more and more time into it, I shouldn't have to worry.

Thanks a lot guys

ugh now I think about it, if she curves the final grade and just uses this to scare the living craps out of us, I'll have a good grade.

aghakjfdas anyone have any suggestions to do good in Calc 2? I've been studying like mad for the past few weeks, and I still do bad...

It's like a hit or a miss now. I either get 100%'s, or I get 70%'s...

Calculus was hard for me too. Mainly cuz I dont do the homework but anyway... I suggest going to your teacher for help like during a free period. That helped me alot because the teacher gives you one-on-one attention plus he/she will know you are a hard-worker. I think you will learn alot quicker than studying by yourself. Oh yeah, do the homework, which Im still trying to learn.. Senior year- its hard to stay focus..:(

Hope I helped

to be quite honest i think its like what you said, hit or miss. i pretty much thought calc was really easy and got a good grade + 5 on bc exam without any work, and then there were kids working really hard who got terrible grades. its pretty much like a different concept and way of thinking from the original math, and its like either u get it or u dont, i dont think it has anything to do with intelligence or effort. i mean obvoiusly its different when get into more detail with calc but my experience with calc bc (basically 1 and 2) is that they're jsut introducing ideas and u either get it or u dont... that being said get a ti89 titanium lol it basically does the calc for u... i wish i had that calculator last year instead of me writing these long a$$ pgrms on my 86

lol see I have one, and it helped... for one test, but totally screwed me over the rest of the time

My teacher's really different because she makes us understand the problems over actually... doing them. I've had tests where I didn't use a calculator once, not because it's easy, but because it's all proofs.

I dunno, I know the concept, and I know how to do them, I just... can't on the tests for some reason.

lol... if u get whats going on and still do bad on the tests idk what to say... mayb stop getting high right b4 calc class haha

Just wait till Michigan calc...it's so much fun.

oh I have heard the rumors, that's why I'm taking Calc here! :D

Oh boy oh boy. Math 215: Online homework, weekly homework, recommended homework, labs; did I leave anything out? The sheer workload was so frustrating that I opted to take Diff Eq next year instead of the current semester (I'm a high school junior). If Math 115/116 are anything like Math 215, be glad you took Calc BC this year!

OH MY GOD, B-!!!!!!!!!! thats not bad. chill out

haha. yeah, you're fine. i would not look down upon a b- or c+ in calculus II.
