Should I Be Worrying?

Hey guys,

So I applied to MIT EA, and now that decisions are coming up in about a week or so I'm starting to worry whether or not I made a good decision on what to write about on my additional section.

As a student who came from a foreign country during 9th grade, I underwent numerous hardships, starting from learning a new language to trying to making completely new friends in the US.

I was trying to write about these experiences in my additional section essay, but my parents told me that those topics are too common and instead encouraged me to write about my research experience, which I did so.

I'm starting to worry because I feel like I should've written about my experiences in the US instead, because my app is nothing too special. And besides, my research wasn't anything too special.

I don't know, just going through a time of anxiety haha...

What do you guys think?

You already posted this elsewhere… don’t double post.

Why are you worrying if you can’t change anything?

Additional comments are usually best to explain vital information for your application. Like working full-time in additional to attending school. So it probably wasn’t a good idea to write about research there.

Also I would add that writing about research isn’t a very good idea either. A) it can be quite boring & uninteresting B) a lot of other people have research so you are putting yourself in a position to be compared directly against other people’s accomplishments which most likely outshine yours.

Writing about the difficulties of learning a foreign language or making new friends would have been an awful idea tho. Like your parents said they are incredibly common topics that won’t help your admission chances.

It is also dependent on your scores. Don’t worry too much because your essay is not the only thing in the process. It is very difficult to write an amazing, outstanding essay. I would worry if your other stats aren’t good.
