Hi, I’m really interested in Brown University but I feel like my scores/APs/GPA set me back a bit. These are my stats, and should I even bother?

SAT: 2200
ACT: 31

GPA:
UW- 3.6
W- 3.8

APs taken:
EuroHist, English, USHist (out of 4)
Next year:
Lit, Environmental Science (out of possible 6)

Rank: 17/500
Public school w/ lower income majority.

Extracurriculars:
-Freshman, Soph, Jr, ASB president
- Mock trial lawyer all 4 years, co captain for 1 and prez for 1.
- Academic Decathalon, 2 years, 1 as president.
-CSF, NHS, NEHS, 2 years
-Worked at a fast food restaurant since Feb 09.

Community service:
-200 hours cs at library.
-4 years of Relay for Life
-2 years of Great American Clean up

Next year, as ASB prez, I have to take two periods of leadership, basically barring me from participating in 2 more aps (Calc, WeThePeople). I also will have taken only 2 years of general
Spanish, and participate in no sports.
My worries are that I’ve focussed so much on ASB, my schedule will look really bad. But I can’t do anything about it. Should I even apply?

Thanks

Oh, and I’m also Asian: Vietnamese and Irish. First gen American citizens. (parents are Vietnamese immigrants) I know my ethnicity will hurt me further in my app.

Plenty with your stats get in and plenty get rejected as well. You should throw your hat in the ring. They will look at your entire application package as well as where you come from.

I can’t believe your school makes you give up 2 academic periods for leadership ‘classes’! That makes no sense, why isn’t there only one, or why isn’t it after school? Are you sure you want that post?

To strengthen your application, you should take AP chem, phyics or bio instead of Enviro. Only 2 years language is below the minimum Brown asks for (ouch) they ask for 3 and prefer 4. Are you fluent in any other language? That may mitigate things. AP Calc would strengthen your academic package.

You ethnicity will not hurt you at all in you app, why would you say so?

For ASB president, you’re required to have two periods of leadership, it’s the only asb position that needs it. Even if I didn’t have two periods, I’d end up missing class frequently (3/5 days ofthe week), as those leadership periods are during the class periods of which most asb events take place.

Our school doesnt offer AP chem, physics, or bio. Only honors chem, physics. Ive taken honors chem. I wish I could take AP calc, but that’s definitely not a possibility. I am fluent in Vietnamese.

Asians are typically a highly represented minority, wouldn’t being Asian affect my chances into getting a school focussed on diversity?

Don’t focus/worry about it much: I know people from “over-represented minorities” going with lower-than-average stats. It depends on what you’ll bring to the table much more than ethnicity.

Thanks for the replies, they’re helping out.
I know my stats aren’t the best, and my courseload is definitely not as challenging as it could be…
But I’ve really concentrated on certain ec’s, which is why my academics aren’t as difficult, which probably wasn’t a Smart choice.

Would it be better to take AP environmental or Honors physics? That’s all my school offers. I’d take both if I could
and my lack of a 3rd or 4th year of language really hurts my competitiveness. I was trying to get enrolled at community college over the summer to take a third year, but I was waitlisted and the classes are overflowed, I don’t get priority as I’d be a concurrent student.
Should I still try to get in that third year of Spanish, possibly over fall?

Vietnamese are not usually considered as Asian in admissions, They are underrepresteted and usually poor, so get pretty good aid.

If you want real answers. Honors Physics is better. 3rd/4th year language is important. ASB Prez is good, but not academic. There is no formula for admittance, just do your best.

Alright, thanks so much! I’ll be putting in my counselor request slip to get my schedule changed!

Well good luck, you can PM me, but I can’t say if my advice is right. I actually think Vietnamese is URM in college admissions. But either way, you shouldn’t even think twice about it because it is something you can’t control. Think about what you can do. Write a great essay. I’d say don’t over reach, but my kid was an over reacher and sometimes she could pull it off, but other times she couldn’t. It didn’t hurt her in the end.

Show up at that 3rd year Spanish CC class. Attend a couple of classes, see who drops out. Tell the instrucior you won’t have 3 years of language so your application to colleges will be weak. You need it to have the minimum requirements.

You know, it could be just me, but I did not have three years of a language, and I got in. I already speak Spanish and Japanese though. My best advice would be not to stress about it. Live your life, challenge yourself, and do things your passionate about. Brown cares about how genuine you are. In my application, even though I don’t think I was the best on paper, I was very candid. They appreciate that.

Best of luck!!

hey, i’m an asian as well with 2200 on the sat. and i’m going to be a brunonian next fall.

so, don’t give too much thought on the score, i mean it’s important but it’s not the only thing the admission office look at.

Thank you guys alot.
For summer, they only have Basic Spanish available so I’ll see If I can take fall classes for intermediate Spanish.
