Planning on Self Studying AP Stats

Expecting a 3.7-3.8 average this year, junior year i only took two Aps and got a 3.5 and second semester 3.5 cause Apush teacher screwed me over with a C, the reason my GPA is so low is cause Fresh/Soph year there was serious illness in my family and it was terrible my sophmore year second semester because I ended up injuring myself and needed surgery and there was no one to look after my sick parents (One who had brain surgery and the other with Thyroid Cancer), so my school grades dropped because of that, I am on a huge Upward Trend ending with hopefully a 3.8 or 4.0 Senior year.

I know im not the average 4.0 student who is captain of 34347983274974 clubs but do you think they wll overlook my gpa of my senior year expecting minimum 3.6-3.8 uw and 4.0+ w

Your stats would definitely put you in the bottom of the pile but you always have a chance. Your ECs are pretty solid. Write a solid essay and just hope for the best

Make sure your family situation is officially reported to the universities you apply to.

Apply. Even though your chances are low, it’s always worth applying to at least one reach school.

okay thank you guys, alexandre If I do that and get at least a 3.6 or 3.8 first semester of senior year, do I have a chance?

Senior year grades do not have a huge positive swing in admissions. Unless you get C’s D’s which will prompt the college to rescind a decision or at least ask for an explanation on your behalf.

I am not sure I agree cabooser. A student with a steady upward trend in grades who is sitting on the fence could benefit a great deal from a strong midyear report.

I agree that upward trend is good, but still your overall GPA cannot be too far off. You probably need 4.0 this semester as the average GPA for admission is 3.85. If your highest GPA is still below average, it may be not sufficient.

If you are in-state there is no reason not to apply if you can afford the application fees and the Profile fee required for financial aid or have fee waivers. If you are out of state and can afford the costs if you were accepted there is no reason not to apply if you seriously would like to attend. The bottom line is as others have said, using only your GPA which Michigan cares about and says in the common data set it a most considered item, your application is a crap shoot…but it is for a huge percentage of kids who apply.
