Should I change majors?

My current major is associate in arts, but since I want to go into computer science/engineering Should I change it to Associate in Science?

I think maybe you want to post this somewhere else, but what AS degrees does your school offer? Some offer engineering or math or CS. You will hear that it makes more sense to do a Liberal Arts associate’s but different universities have told my daughter to just do her intended major.

If you are intending the transfer to a four year school, concentrate on choosing the courses that the four year school want to see transfer students bring in for your major. If you want to pick up an associates degree along the way, you may want to choose whichever one has requirements that most closely match with the courses you will take for transfer preparation.

You need to talk to your school counselors about the degree specifics. You need to plan your courses with future needs in mind. This means taking required general STEM classes that are prerequisites for your proposed major along with classes that will count for other general education requirements. Do not worry about a degree title but rather focus on being prepared to transfer to the four year school. The four year school will not care about the degree but rather about the courses you have taken. You also need to be sure the versions you take will prepare you for the next courses you take. Your calculus, physics, CS et al should have the content covered by those of the school you intend to get the four year degree. If not you may need to repeat courses or do a lot of catching up to do well in the major.

Don’t worry whether is “arts” or “sciences” in the degree TITLE. As noted above…it’s the courses you need that matter.

I’m a speech pathologist. My bachelors is a bachelors of science, and my masters is a Master of Arts. Same field. The degree is based on the college in which your major is located…so my bachelors was in a college at my university that awarded Bachelor of Science degrees…and my masters was in one that awarded Master of Arts degrees.

Oh…and some of my working colleagues had BA and then BS, or BA and BA, or BS and BS. Same degree…speech pathology.

Ditto on that BA/BS degree. I met requirements for both with my undergrad honors chemistry degree and chose the BA because I liked the white tassel better than the yellow. My father was upset because he thought a BS meant more science but not at UW, even with my major. Then there’s that school with AB’s and not BA’s just to be different.

You plan to transfer- pay attention to the specific course numbers that will transfer. Not all STEM classes are created equally. Some suffice for some jobs but won’t cover what you need for the four year college. Your school guidance center and advising will know.
