Hi, so I've been accepted to both and I would really appreciate some input. Here's a little about me:
I want to do Journalism and I know the UC's don't have that as a specific major, but which out of the two do you think is more geared toward that?
I care about school and grades but I've kind of been studying all my life and I really want to have fun now. I wouldn't say parties/ a social scene are a main factor in choosing, But i'd like my experience to be fun and that is definitely important to me.
Campus aesthetics is a big deal. I want the area I live in to look beautiful and inviting. I would also like a good college town so that I won't get bored.
I'm more of a free-spirited person who is very accepting. I like to be around cool, chill people who don't really create drama.
The only thing that really annoys me is overly flamboyant or dramatic people, people who are incompetent or not so bright, and people that are dull.
Thanks for reading; any advice or input you can give me would be much appreciated. I really want to make sure I choose the right college for me and for my future. Thanks again.

UCSD has a better name overall, but for journalism and your preferences, UCSC might be better for you. My sister goes to UCSD and she loves it, but she always tells me funny stuff about her school. People dub UCSD, UC socially dead and look up “triton eye” on urban dictionary, but she loves it and it’s a beautiful campus right by the beach. It’s a very smart school. Out of all the UC’s, it’s probably under UCLA and UCB.

I can’t really say much more else about San Diego, but I’ve grown up in the Santa Cruz area all my life. UCSC has a forest vibe with deer everywhere. It’s a tourist beach town, basically but locals love Santa Cruz despite the touristy-ness. The hotspots are downtown and the boardwalk. Downtown has great shopping, an American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, ect. SC has a rep for being “weird” and it’s probably one of the only cities where locals wear hoodies with their own town name on it (b/c of the skate shop). It’s also a very “friendly” and laid back environment, overall if you catch my drift…

San Diego might be considered more conservative and Santa Cruz more liberal I guess. Make sure you read up on each school’s “Yelp” reviews and urban dictionary is a fun resource. Good luck!

I think, from your description, that Santa Cruz may be a better fit. The ultimate in free-spirited, chill people. Would you like living in a forest? A campus that looks like a mountain retreat, with views of the ocean? If so, UCSC is the place for you. Seems to me it would be a perfect place for writing.

UCSD has more prestige associated with the name, but I think that UCSC would better suit your goals. Both are very pretty campuses next to beaches, but UCSC is also located in the middle of the red wood forrest, which gives it an aesthetic edge to UCSD’s concrete.

From your description UCSC is probably a better fit because it is described as very “chill” but there aren’t a lot of rager parties, mainly kickbacks with a lot of weed. But it also doesnt have any major sports teams, not a lot of school spirit, and greek life is frowned upon. You have to decide whether those are pluses or minuses for you.

But hey, if you go to UCSD maybe you can hop over to SDSU for some major parties or something.

UCSD is the better UC academically. The college system at UCSD is unique for the UCs.

UCSC is more what I would consider the ‘college experience’ which seems to be important to you. (It would be important to me, too.) I think UC Santa Cruz is beautiful. However, to be fair, I have never been to UC San Diego. It’s reputation doesn’t have it as much of a college town experience, though.

UCSD does have the edge in reputation, but possibly you could transfer after 2 years, if you still wanted to do so.

Thank you all for your input! It’s been really helpful to hear from all of you. From what you’ve told me, it seems like I’d fit in better at UCSC, but i’m still unsure because I do value my education extensively and know that SD will be better for that. I also just got accepted into UC Santa Barbara, so now I really dont know what to decide.

Seems like UCSB is just right, a best of both worlds situation.

However, UCSC’s residential college system has some similarities to that of UCSD.

Uci has a literary journalism major
