Should I consider opting into the possible summer admission offer when applying to GeorgiaTech?

On the CommonApp, it asks if I’d basically like to opt into possibly starting at GT through summer admission. I’ve read that GT often offers this to students with lower scores so that they’re not included in the incoming freshman averages. I currently have a 29 ACT, and I want to major in computer engineering, so from the info. I’ve gathered, I feel like opting in might help my chances of admission. I still plan to take the ACT one last time this October 28th to try to raise my score. However, I live out of state, and I come from a pretty poor family, so I don’t know if I’d be able to afford an extra semester of tuition. Does anybody have experience with GT’s summer offer? If I’m admitted through the summer offer, do you think it’d be possible to negotiate with GT to switch to Fall Admission? Any advice?

Opting for summer admission WILL increase your chances, but do not expect GT to allow you to defer to fall. Use the summer, if admitted, to earn some credits, learn your way around, and get a head start on your degree. Then when classes get tough and you have to drop a couple, it won’t hurt as much. GT is not known for generous OOS aid, or a high 4-yr graduation rate. Good luck to you!

Thanks! I eventually opted in and I hope to get admitted either way :-SS

Any downside of opting in the summer admission?
