Should I consider Tulane as a safety?

I'm using the Personal Application (if that matters).

Hispanic male
Public School
GPA: UW 3.75 ish
Rank: 50/750
SAT 1: CR 670, M 730, W 750
SAT 2: I took french twice: 650 first time and 770 second time. Math 1: 760, Math 2: 740, and US Hist 710
I have all but 2 AP classes this year; these other two are required.
EC's: Tutor, School Orchestra, Key Club, and Co-Director of my church's band

Thanks!!

db - IMHO you have an excellent chance of being admitted. But is Tulane a safety for you? No. Your stats are very good, but they don’t fall in the top quartile of accepted students. And Tulane admits just one applicant in six … far below the one-in-two that is typical for safety schools.

Judging from your stats, you should be accepted. However, from some of the previous posts of those who have been deferred, I would say you should not consider Tulane a safety.

It is definitely a match, and you may even qualify for a merit award.

All of the above are correct. The way things are trending at Tulane right now, you cannot consider it an absolute safety, especially if they somehow pick up on the fact that you consider it as such. However, there is also no question you are a strong match and just on stats alone, you would be accepted and probably offered a $20K-$22K merit award. The fact that you are Hispanic will also be a plus, might even kick the award up to the top level of $25K.

Just a small correction to post #2. The last 2 years Tulane has admitted about 1 in 4, not 1 in 6. However, that is still more selective that most other schools that are USNWR higher ranked, like Wash U, and it is almost identical to University of Chicago.

thank you guys! i’ll look into other colleges that are better fit to be “safeties.” :D

Always a smart move. Nothing to lose except maybe a few $$.

almost identical to Chicago?

The acceptance rate, both about 27%.

dillbilly, ds finally got his acceptance last night and has stats very similar to yours (higher SAT, lower rank), right down to the Hispanic male. Took two months to get a “yes” despite his priority app so I get the sense the adcoms are crushed with apps. Because of that I wouldn’t call it a safety for anyone, but, yeah, I’d be real surprised if you didn’t get in.

Agree with everyone above. Especially as we are now into the regular admission timeframe, I’d say Tulane should be considered a match. Good luck. And CONGRATS youdontsay!!! Great news!!!
