After I submitted my applications I recieved a poetry recitation award as well as a nomination for the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award (one nominated per school). Are these worth notifying colleges I've applied to about? If so, how would I go about notifying them? Thanks for the help!

Yes, just try to do it all at once rather than sending several updates. Congrats!

Thank you so much, entomon! Does anyone know if I should just send it to the admissions department at each school? What kind of letter would I write.

You might want to check the college websites (or call admissions) for information on where to send updates. Some want you to send them to regional reps, but when I checked for one school, they listed a FAX number to send updates to, so it varies.

Just write a very quick note saying that you have received recent recognition which you’d like to add to your application for their consideration.

These awards are usually best to be saved and submitted if you are deferred. Then, you’d have something new to add. Often awards at this time of the year aren’t all that impressive (not that your particular awards aren’t impressive, but springtime is when you might get some national awards to add to your collection.)

I have a different POV:

For an early school, what if you deferred. Would those awards have helped you be accepted or deferred??

I don’t think there’s a timing strategy for getting recognition on your resume, it’s either there or not. Adcoms don’t give more credit for an award based on when it’s submitted.

I’d assume you know if you’re possibly up for national awards that are due in the spring; thus my original comment about not sending too many updates.

I am not trying for any national awards at the moment. I may advance farther in the poetry contest but it isn’t very likely, and no one in our school who was nominated for the scholarship has actually advanced to EARNING the money, so that seems unlikely also. I am not applying anywhere early decision, but I have applied to several places early action.

One final question: the University of Rochester nominated me for the “George Eastman Young Leaders” award this summer. Should I include this in my added information? I didn’t add it before because I thought the other colleges wouldn’t like knowing that I was interested in Rochester and Rochester already knew about the award because I earned a fee waiver for it and will receive a good amount of scholarship money if I’m accepted.
