I am in my 2nd year of community college as a pre med and I planning on transferring to get my bachelor degree in about 1 year. I am about to start my first job as a CNA but I am going to be working 20-30 hours a week. I am just wondering if I should continue to volunteer at my local hospice ( I have already 60+ hours done over the summer) or if I should just focus on doing well in school and work. Will the CNA job count as clinical experience? I enjoy going to volunteer at hospice but I feel like my time can be better spent studying or doing some other type of volunteering.
I also think that, if you keep up that level of volunteer work, you’ll be overextended. I’d suggest you at least drop down the number of hours you spend at the hospice (can you do a couple hours per week, or one day per month, or just special projects, or…?) or put that on hold for now. If you add in the CNA and see that you still have plenty of time, you can always add the hospice back in.
I definitely agree with the post above and think that you should limit the number of hours you volunteer if you want to work as a CNA. Maybe you could volunteer a few times a month since you have a sufficient amount of hours. I love volunteering too and I definitely miss doing it as often as I used to back in high school. I think you should prioritize your time with school and work but, try to volunteer every once in a while.
