I am completing my application to the University of Pittsburgh. The supplements, like teacher recs and essays, are completely optional. I am already planning on sending teacher recs, but should I do the essay? Would it help me or would a less-than-stellar essay only hurt my chances? I'm not very good at talking about myself so my application essays are not that good.

Frankly, I'm only really applying because it is in state and I need to have a relatively cheap school in case my financial situation changes (the rest of the schools I'm applying to are upwards of $30,000 per year).

Always write the optional essay. Unless you feel absolutely confident that Pitt is a solid safety school, it’s always better to write the essay. It shows that you’re interested in the school. So if you’re under qualified academically, this can give you a boost and conversely it can show that an overqualified candidate is still seriously considering the school. Make sure you have it edited by a teacher or guidance counselor. Don’t write it the night before and take your time. You’re right that a sloppy essay will hurt your chances.

Keep calm and do your best. Plus if you put down that you want to study math/science etc then they may cut you some slack on your essay, but not a lot, so make it good.

Definetely write the essay! It would only show the school that you are even more interested in them and that you showed time and dedication on their app.
