Hi, I am currently a freshman pre-med Biology major and I was wondering whether I should even bother getting a double major. I know that I want to attend medical school, and I know that it isn't an easy goal by any means, but I am pretty confident that I will be able to do it. That being said, would it be worth it for me to get a double major? I have already completed all of my gen ed pre reqs through AP, IB, and DE classes while in high school and I am re-taking all of the sciences one, but that goes along with my Biology major. Basically, I don't know if it would be worth it to even pursue a double major because I don't want to pay money for classes that I may never end up using anyway. So should I go for a double major since I will have quite a bit of schedule space since I don't have any gen ed classes to do, or just stick too one and make sure that I can get the best science and overall GPA possible? Also, would sticking to one major look bad to medical schools since it may not look like I challenged myself enough even if I do take mostly science and math classes? Also, would a double major in Sports Management or Business be difficult to do in addition to a Biology major?

Med schools will typically not give a lot of weight, if any, to work done in high school.

Med schools expect to see that you’ve pushed yourself in college. As such besides doing well in “premed” reqs, major reqs, you’ll need to fill up your dance card (schedule) and do well in other courses whether that turns out to be a double major, a major/minor, etc. I do not think med schools care a lot, if any, if an applicant has a double major, or major/minor per se. It’s an applicant’s overall academic performance (cGPA, sGPA) post high school along with MCAT, ECs. LORs, etc that matter. Good luck

You can’t just use your AP and DE classes for your prereqs.

What BCMP classes will you take WHILE IN COLLEGE?

Forget the double major…instead, take the right BCMP classes that will demonstrate proficiency.

When I said Gen Eds, I meant things like history and english classes, not any of the sciences or math classes, I planned on re-taking all of those anyway.
