Should I drop with a W?

I am now taking math 8 (CAL 2) at smc over the short winter session. So far I am just doing so-so in the class, by this i mean i am having a low B coz my professor is kinda weird in giving partial credits and all that. I have been working hard to get a better grade, but thanks to my carelessness I always make silly mistakes.

I got an A for Cal 1 and I was expecting myself to get an A for this class too. I don't know if i should drop the class right now with a W and retake the class later on. Coz i am a bio major with a 3.7 and this is my second semester. a B in a 5 units class will lower my gpa a lot.

Should I or should i not drop the class? How will a W affect my chances of getting into ucla? my counselor told me to save the W for harder classes like org chem and so forth which are required for my major. What should I do?

Pls give me some advice. I am very worried now. thanks.

A "B" isn't bad for Math 8. Who's your prof? I'm taking Math 2 right now @ SMC, and need to take Math 7 in the Spring. Which teacher did you take?

I'd rather have a B than a W, by far. If you get a B, it's above average and almost an A, but on the other hand a W ain't sh it.

Are you sure the professor will not put any additional curve at the end of the semester?

Hey dreamweaver. How did ur first semester go at smc? A 3.7 gpa is good. So i am guessing it went well. HOw did u like smc? Did i do a good describing how it will be?

as far as the W, math 8 is dificult w/ most teachers. As long as u get a B, i wouldn't worry about it. If u're in danger of C, drop it.

go through with it, its winter anyway and a B is fine and wont count against you during admission decisions, however, a W will be seen and noticed. just take the B, unless your a science or math major

I would think W will stand out so much in your transcript. Take the B.

nonononono!
i have a W because i didn't know if i was even going to get a B or an A or a C.
having 1-2 W's will not affect your process at ALL! trust me...the first they look at is obviously the GPA so you need to keep that up there.

not affect your chances at all?

first off, if this is your second semester defintely take the B, cause it will have no bearing on your chances, if it is your first semester, take the B anyway. a W is equivilant of an F, whatever anyone might tell you think of it that way first. on your app its your job to try and convince the adcoms it really isnt an F by stating your extreme circumstance. a W in Calc, a class you will need to take again anyway if you choose to drop with an W will show that you were doing poorly and did not want the grade. unless you have a damned good reason (extra workload, family issues, etc) as to why you dropped dont do it!

a W is not even close in any circumstance to being a F. Although you are correct to try and explain concisely each W on your transcript it is not regarded as an F. The reason I am acting as though I am the leading authority on this subject is I just got done meeting with a transfer counselor, we chatted about my transcript and what not and other things and he was telling me he has sucessfuly transfered many people who had 5-10 w's.

W's are regarded as nothing except extra used space on your transcript if you have a reason. No reason, the adcom will question it if there are more than say 3 or 4. They realize that almost all college students drop a few classes during college, especially when your first starting. Getting a W for a B i a no brainer, take the B. Getting W's becuase of work, family issues or something else is different. I have a substantial number of W's and have talked to many adcoms and explained my situation and they have told me (cant verify if they actually do this during their so called hollistic review) that it is no problem. UC's in particular just cross out the W's and dont even look at them when transfering

Hey, how would a W on a low level math course be taken for admissions to UVA? I dropped the course because I missed an exam and a quiz because my grandmother contracted pneumonia and I left college to see her. I didn't get a Dean's note because I wasn't thinking and I couldn't retake the exam. I intend to say that in an essay.

I have one C and one W. I'd much rather have 2 Ws. :(

Thanks for all your invaluable advice.

I think i might just drop the class coz my professor is kinda like rushing through the materials before the end of the winter session and I dun feel like I am confident enough to secure my B anymore, coz touch wood i might screw up my final and end up with a C.

Do we need to explain our reasons of getting a W for the application? or is it just required when we have more than one?

Thanks.

Man... taking Calclulus 2 over short term.. you must be kidding me! That is very tough! I think dropping it is not a bad idea... you better off taking it in the long term because that way you have more time to digest the concepts (ex: testing the series whether they are convergent or divergent is kind of tricky)

Yeah, i think i need more time coz Cal 2 is not my only class over winter. The teacher is cramming all the concepts or should i say like a chapter in just a few days and I am really having some hard time now in doing the parametric and polar coordinates...

I really dun want to have a W. do i need to explain to the UC why i have this W later on? thanks

I would definitely take the W over the chance of getting a C. In fact, I have two Ws on my record from early on in my academic career. I just told the UCs in my application that I was a psycho early on so my grades suffered and I elected to take a W and retake the classes later on. I did and aced both of them later. Just make sure if you do a W that you get at least a B if you elect to take the class again.

Not needed... all you have to do is to list your W for cal 2 for the term that you dropped the class (All your grades (A B C D F W CR P) and courses (transferable or not) regardless what they are should be list on your application.

You may however discuss your calculus 2 "W" grade either in your essay or in the very last page on the UC application about it if you feel it is needed.
