Hi. I'm US citizen living in Europe. I've been recently admitted to West Virginia University, Seton Hall University (NJ), Binghamton University (NY), Ohio University and Ohio State University. I am admitted as an accounting major in all of them.

WVU and Seton Hall will cost around $5000-$7000 after all scholarships and financial aid ( $5500 loan, work-study, pell grant and fseog grant) Ohio State University and Ohio University will cost around $8000-$9000 (after scholarships, world-study and financial aid - $5500 loan, pell grant and fseog grant) All of these will be affordable to my family.

Of course, I know that Binghamton is the most prestigious of these schools I've been admitted to in regards to accounting major, but it will cost around $17000 after financial aid and my parents won't afford it.

Do you guys think there is any sense applying to Arizona State University considering that I'll most likely get similar financial offer from them (scholarships + loans and pell, fseog grant, work-study)?

I like the fact that a school is in Phoenix which will certainly offer more internships opportunities than WVU or OU. The weather there is also great all year long. On the other hand I have family on the East Coast (New York area) and I am looking forward to live there after I graduate.

To sum up, I want to rank those schools: WVU, OSU, OU and Seton Hall and decide if I should apply to ASU. I have always wanted to study at the university with great academics combined with great sports and school spirit atmosphere. Which school will offer me best internship opportunities and future connections?

Apply to ASU. At best you’ll get a better financial aid offer than from WVU, at worst you won’t and you won’t be worse off.
After that, I’d pick WVU and OSU, and I’d choose the cheapest of those two. Did you get into the Honors College? If you can, you should apply.

???

How do you know that you’re going to get a SEOG grant? That isn’t a given at those schools.

Thank you MYOS1634 for your response.

mom2collegekids - When I run net price calculators on their websites they usually estimate I will get $500-$1500 SEOG grant. If not, those schools will still be affordable because of big scholarships, $5500 loan I will take and Pell grant.

Is it possible to study business at ASU and then get a job in New York, Boston, Philly or DC? Will that be easier with OSU or WVU?

I’m a bit concerned about low graduation rates that those states schools have. Is it really that hard to graduate in time at those universities? I’m ambitious and motivated student and I am not going to college only to party every day. Will I have a hard time graduating in 4 years even if I put a lot of effort into academics? Is it difficult to sign up for classes and create a schedule that will allow me to graduate in 4 years in such big schools?

Yes, it is possible to study business, particularly accounting at any of the schools you list, including ASU, and get a job in major cities. Though I get the feeling that OSU has more “panache” than WVU, not more than a feel. OSU is larger, so more alumni networking. Most state schools and large schools will have low grad rates. If you are accepted as an accounting major and register on time, there should not be too much trouble in graduating in 4 years. I’ve not heard of issues, unless there the student made changes in their major, found themselves needing courses not offered in a given semester, are late in registering , or if the major is one where courses seem to have that issue. My niece graduated from WVU in 4 years with no trouble.

Can you family afford to fly you out to Arizona and back whenever you want to come home, or for holidays and such?

Business at ASU is ranked higher than all of those schools. WP Carey is a good b-school. I think you should apply, it’s easy, no essays or anything.

Thank you guys. I’ll certainly apply to ASU after reading your posts. Airline tickets won’t be such a burden because my mother works in an airline and has great discounts.

ASU appeals to me because it is a decent school in a warm climate (it would be something new to me to live in a place where it is hot all year long ;p) and is located near airport which is also very important to me.

Will I have a hard time making friends at those state schools at the very beginning because I’m from outside the US? My TOEFL score is 100 but I guess it will take some time for me to get fully comfortable in informal english etc. I’d really like to take advantage of intramural sports, party from time to time and go to the sports games but at the same time get a decent education.

Do you guys know some comparable schools where out of state tuition is not higher than $25000?

ASU has like 10,000 freshman in each class. You shouldn’t have a problem finding people you like hanging out with lol.
