Should I even apply to Brown?

Since my sophomore year, I loved this school, but recently I’ve grown to dislike the school on certain aspects and I’ve questioned even applying because I don’t want to waste time/money just to get rejected. It would really help me if somebody could impartially explain to me the social and academic atmospheres of Brown University. I’ve heard very good things about Brown, but I’ve heard many bad things as well! Therefore, I would also like if somebody could explain the great aspects of Brown, and the not so great aspects of Brown.
The second issue is that I wonder if I should even apply! Here’s my info

Then you should definitely not apply to Brown. While you’re at it, skip every other selective college with admission rates below 40-50%, because you wouldn’t want to waste time and money on less than a sure thing.

Brown also doesn’t want students who need their hand held, which is what you are asking for in your post. There’s a huge amount of detailed information on Brown’s website and here on CC. While we are happy to answer specific questions, we really don’t have the time to write customized general summaries for lazy undecided students.

-_______________________________- Well Brown DOES have a 9% acceptance rate. I’ve applied to Bowdoin, Vanderbilt, Boston College, and Amherst. I definitely understand how selective these schools are. My parents are only letting me apply to 6 colleges and I only have one more spot. I phrased that wrong but the meaning was that I am wondering if I should apply to Brown, or apply somewhere else.

I feel that the above post is extremely unnecessary. After spending time on The Student Room (basically the College Confidential for UK universities), it’s amazing to see how differently people treat each other! The posters on CC are extremely rude and disrespectful.

Why wouldn’t you be encouraging? You don’t have time to help lazy (which I do not think is fair to say of the original poster), undecided students, but you have time to post something so rude and unhelpful? He’s asking for help…

To address the original post in a respectful manner…

Brown isn’t for everyone. The social life isn’t much to write home about (based on what I saw from my time on campus). However, there are parties and outings just like every other university; they just might not be as common/wild.

I encourage you to apply. I didn’t read your stats, but if this is something that you feel like you want (no matter your reservations), then you should apply. The supplement isn’t THAT strenous; a lot of the responses they ask you to write call for under 100 words.

You shouldn’t justify what you’ve said. Don’t kiss his ass.

Six applications are not really enough these days if you are applying to elite schools. You list 4; do you have a solid safety school picked out as #5? I would not apply to Brown if you are truly limited to 6 – your SATs are too low and nothing in your ECs stand out enough to make up for it. Go for a school you really like with an acceptance rate in the 25-25% range where the odds are more likely to favor you.

I think you should apply too. The other colleges on your list arent crazy hard to get into and seems like you should apply to at least 1 dream school.

Be sure to add a safety school too though.

Hi jackrabbit. Perhaps if you could tell us more about the bad things you heard about Brown, we could be more helpful in addressing those specific concerns. :)

I think youre confusing me with someone else.

I never said I have any gripes with Brown.

Edit : looks like youre confusing me with the person who started this thread.

Anyways, I read that one of the reasons OP is holding back on applying to Brown is because of money. Well you CAN apply to a LOT of schools with a fee waiver. Some schools just ask you for a written statement while some like Brown require your counselor to send an official request.

I know because thats how I did it.

Ah pardon my confusion, your usernames are rather similar.

My offer still stands for OP though.
