Should i even apply?

Call admissions on Monday and ask them to send you an application.

i second the idea of getting in touch with Questbridge; in essence, that’s the sort of information they would be giving you.

Pepperdine is a reach while Williams is a match???

What in the world?

williams is located in the snowiest section of the country while pepperdine overlooks one of the world’s prime surfing meccas. Which do you think appeals to more Hispanics?

so you believe that if i apply ED to williams/amherst or middlebury i have the greatest shot to get in

i would put your odds getting into middlebury and williams slightly better than getting into amherst. but, as someone else said, you have nothing to lose by applying to all of them.

well the problem is my parents want me to use my ED on NYU-CAS… do you believe i have good odds there, and will those schools look unfavorably on not using ED on them

How much does your family make? I think everyone’s been assuming you’re from a poor, first generation college family.
the problem with NYU is there are tons of stories of people who had no problem being admitted but then, weren’t awarded any fin/aid. But, maybe cost isn’t a factor?

the schools on your list wont be “offended” by your not applying ED… why would they? you’ll be viewed as any other regular decision candidate. I dont think you should view ED as a “golden ticket” that just boosts our chance of getting into any school. you should only use ED on a school you absolutely love. it should be your #1 choice. remember, if you get in, you ARE going there.

Allow me to explain. 37,180 students applied to NYU this past year. There are more than 2.4 million Hispanic people living in the five boroughs of New York state. NYU has a pool of very strong and outstanding Hispanic students, and holds them to high standards. OP stands little chance applying there.

Hopkins is a top university that has a very healthy and strong pool of Hispanic applicants as well. It has very strong name recognition, and it happens that many young Latinos/as want to become doctors. Thus, Hopkins’ standards are high too.

I’ll take johnwesley’s “surfing mecca” observation. Yes, Florida has a significant Hispanic population from which to draw strong students. Reach.

Williams and Amherst lie on the threshold between Reach and Match. Both schools are willing to bend the numbers significantly if they feel that a student contributes to the diversity of the community. Amherst in particular. Socioeconomic and ethnic diversity are important to these schools.

If Boston = Boston College, it lies on the threshold between Match and Safety. BC is a university with strong name recognition among Roman Catholic households, and it so happens that many Hispanic families are RC. Thus, it has a strong pool of Hispanic candidates as well, though it loses out students often to better universities.

Midd lists Race/Ethnicity as “Very Important” on their Common Data Set. Nuff said.
Trinity is a less selective LAC that would benefit from having more diversity.
Holy Cross will welcome you with open arms. They publish their minority numbers in their propaganda. I literally laughed out loud when I read them.

–

Hope that helps.

out of the schools in discussion, which have relatively “impacting” names in the pre med field?

there’s no such thing as a “pre-med” field. and, even if there were one, I’d say they were all pretty much capable of providing what you need. Your best bet is to ask that same question on the pre-med CC forum. This thread is getting off-topic, IMO.

Actually, you might not want to post that on the pre-med forum. It has been asked a million times, with the same response. “Read the stickies at the top of this forum.”

Short version, go wherever you want and do well.

which of the liberal arts colleges give more leeway in terms of grades for minorities?

are you the OP, or the OP’s parent?

the student

well, I honestly think that question (@#54) will probably get more answers on the “College Search & Selection” forum, not on the Amherst forum.

The ability to do independent research is a crucial skill that all of your prospective colleges expect you to have. ;)

Midd took 70%+ of URMs regardless of stats (I swear I read it somewhere here)
so it’s practically a safety school for you.

really?! so if im a decent student (3.0 plus gpa and 1900 plus sat) im set pretty much?
