Should I even bother applying now :(?

Soo. I was so excited to apply ED to HMC.

I have about a 3.8UW 4.2 W GPA, scored a 2100 (690CR 730M 680W) on my third try.

Took the subject tests today for the first time. I epically failed. probably got below 600 on both Lit and Math II. :(

At my interview, they said I should apply even if i have bad SAT II scores since one test isnt going to be a determining factor.

What do you guys think? Retake them and then submit, or am I just way out of my league? : (

My dad doesn't even think i can get into UCSD now.. I hope he's not right..

Register now for Dec. retake Math II and Lit. Stop beating yourself up about it. Do better next time.

Aw Blackroses, sorry you had a disappointing test sitting. :frowning: Not time to quit, though, if you’re serious about attending a place like Mudd.

I second what Battlo said. Bummer that you were taking your subjects for the first time in November when planning to apply ED, but it ain’t over till it’s over. If you were my son applying last year, I’d advise you to still apply ED if you’re certain that Mudd is the right place for you, and make the case clearly as to why it’s the right place for you – fit seems to be very important to HMC. If the rest of your “package” is solid and test scores really are the thing that would break you, then you may get deferred to the RD pool, in which case higher retake scores will help you.

You might not have tested as poorly as you think – remember, the scores are normalized. But let’s assume you did. Why? Were you sick? Did you just have a bad test day? Or did the tests cover material you haven’t worked with before? If the latter, then you have some prep work to do between now and the December test sitting. Get some SparkNotes, a test prep book, whatever is available to you, and teach yourself that missing material. My son had to do this for his second subject test; his high school coursework didn’t cover everything that was on the test. If that’s where you find yourself now, know that it can be done, but it does take a significant investment of time and effort.

Good luck! :)

Blackroses, geek-mom is right. Don’t give up. Figure out what went wrong, take the test again and see what happens. Test scores are only one part of admissions process. These scores are pretty low for Harvey Mudd (the math score is the one that is problematic), but if there were things you just didn’t know about, then you have time to bring it up. We are rooting for you!

Also, if you took them today, how do you know you epically failed? Did you get your scores?

No i didn’t get my scores… but i feel like i did terrible… i know there is a curve.

For math, I did the first 35 and felt good about all of them, then ran out of time, so i did C for the last 15. hopefully there were at least 3, hopefully more Cs on the last 15. At worst It seems I’d get somewhere in the 650 actually…

As for lit. Hell if I know. I didn’t finish the last 22 of the 60, so I put C for those too.

Hopefully I’ll be okay. I took geek_mom’s advice and decided to go with the ED anyway.

Personally, I would consider registering for the December test if possible and applying RD. A sub-600 score on the IIC is almost a sure rejection in my book (by my book). This will give you time to study your ass off and get a much higher IIC.

i’d second retaking the tests and applying RD. 600 math iic puts your odds quite low, even as an ED.

^ I’m outnumbered by people who’ve been there… Go with the alums’ advice, Blackroses. :)

^ well it’s a little late for that… i already sent them. Oh well, at worst the people there said they’d defer me. I don’t think they’d reject me with everything else being in order…

I probably didn’t actually get a 600… we’ll see.

^ Bet you’re right about the scores. When you retake, though, watch those totally random answers; the SATs (both Reasoning and Subjects) deduct point fractions for wrong answers. If you can eliminate some answers, guessing may work in your favor – but marking randomly at the end in hopes of scoring a few extra points is more likely to backfire.
By the way, late registration for the December 5 sitting is open through November 12.
Good luck!

Just hang in there. While you have higher GPA (just by a tid bit) and SAT scores (150pts more than me), I’m sure you’ll be fine if you stop beating yourself up.

One of my friends were admitted with test scores lower than me, albeit with probably a higher GPA, so there’s always still hope.

Sometimes, we are often our own worst critics. As long as you don’t give up, I’m sure things should come through.
