Hopefully killer essays
and can get good recs

..............and I'm instate
should I even bother with the application?

I don’t know how much they take into account the amount of work you do. Many people work 10hrs a week here, where as I worked 24, and then we could each claim work experience. 40 is a lot though, I can see why your grades were so low. Were you also working 40hrs/week during your Soph. year?

Probably worth it to apply. I doubt you’ll get in, but you might as well try.

You should apply, but your chances are not good. Your first semester of your junior year is what really hurts you. Definitely do well your first semester of your senior year as Michigan will most likely defer you and ask for a mid-year report.

Thanks Q and Alexandre. Do you think if I get deferred I have a good chance at being accepted? Also do you think I should retake the ACT and try for a 36? Thanks again.

If you got deffered and then got straight As, they’d likely accecpt you. If they wouldn’t, I don’t see why they’d defer you in the first place.

There’s not much point in retaking a 34. (I know someone who is because they got a 7 on the essay…? But otherwise…)

If you really think you can get a 35 or 36 go for it, but it won’t make much difference.

Ofcourse you should still consider applying if you have interest in attending. I think your junior year grades really hurt you, though your ACT score may help.

I think you should still apply. I got waitlisted/accepted and I had(When I applied) a 3.2 UW and a 3.83 weighted. Senior year I took really hard classes. My senior year GPA came out to be a 3.5 UW and 4.3 W. You never know until you try. I was involved in many activities in and outside of school. Just show Michigan that you really want to be there and make sure they know that you can make a difference at their school. Your ACT’s are outstanding and that will put you in a greater position. Good luck and stay focused!!!

I think you have a good shot, especially if you emphasize on your admissions application that you were working full-time as a student. (By the way, I worked full time my senior year as a high school student, and I am absolutely amazed that you did that through most of high school. I assume, like me, you had no choice. That is extremely impressive, indicative of your maturity, perseverance and ability to succeed overall and should not go without mention. The idea that this has to do with ‘‘time management’’ is ridiculous… your grades are very good considering your difficult circumstances.) The admissions board really does take that kind of thing into consideration, and they would consider how your unique experience would benefit the university environment as a whole.

On a personal note, I really hope you do get in-- as someone who clearly cares about your community I think you would be a credit to my alma mater. :)
