Essays:

I am not sure what else I need to put. If I forgot something just let me know! Thanks!

Your stats are very similar to mine. I was deferred originally then accepted in the last few weeks of acceptances, but I am in state. It will probably come down to your first semester senior grades.

35hrs a week for yearbook? You spend 35 hrs every week during the school year? 7 hours after school everyday or what?

Hopefully he means 3-5 hours. Because if he spends 35 hours, that is dedication but that won’t make is application as well, that’s a little too much dedication which doesn’t matter once it is pass a certain point. I mean even if he spends 7 hours a day (5 days) or even 5 hours a day (7 days), that doesn’t compensate for his low GPA and low SAT scores.

Reach
GPA is kinda low
EDIT: ^SAT is not low

Yes, 35 hours per week.

4 lunches/wk.- 4 hrs.
5 class periods/wk.- 5 hrs.
2 late night/ week- 6 hours.
Plus, I spend time working before the late nights because I am the editor so during those times I am supposed to be helping my staff mostly. I use this time to get my own work done. 5 hrs/wk
1 work day/ wk- 6 hours
3 sports (all levels)/ wk- 9 hours

Grand Total: 35 hrs a week

I absolutely love yearbook. Most people on staff don’t spend as much time as me there, but I pick up the slack. I take pictures that I don’t have to take and I stay late to get people’s work done. Obviously, I don’t spend more than 5 hours a week on the other activities (except photo which is 10 hrs.).

I’m a girl, by the way.

“I’m a girl, by the way.”

Thanks for clearly that up for us (especially for cdz) Marie! ;)

Anyway, Michigan is a reasonable reach for you. Send in your entire application as early as you can, definitely before November 1. Also, as ryegye suggests, do well your senior year as there is a chance you will be deferred, in which case, senior year grades will count a good deal.

Do you think that I have a greater chance of admit or deferred than rejected?

Also, I definitely will only apply before November 1. But does applying earlier than that deadline really help?

It really depends on your school. Some schools have a reputation for being hard and a 3.6 GPA is more than enough. Have students from your school been admitted into Michigan with 3.6 GPAs?

As for applying Early Response (this is an actual option), yes, it does in fact help.

Well, most kids from my school don’t apply to Michigan since CA has great public schools. The only kids who apply there (with usually about my stats or slightly lower) get in, but they are all legacies. My school is a good public school with several students going to Ivy’s and a good deal going to other top schools as far as I see it. I know US News gave us a silver medal or something. (I don’t know what that means.)

Is there a pro to applying in early September vs. right before the Nov. 1st deadline?

Legacy does not really help applicants’ chances at Michigan that much, so if students with similar stats get into Michigan (legacy or otherwise) from your school, you have a decent chance of getting in yourself.

And yes, applying in early September is better than applying in late October. Youhave everything you need to apply. I would submit your online application, school transcripts, recommendations, SAT results (no need to send your SAT II since Michigan does not require them) as soon as school starts in late August. Might as well get it out of the way before you ger started on your other applications.

Hehehehe, I just noticed the name. Sorry!

I was referring to this one “Math 2 640”

^
but that doesn’t matter because umich does not care for SAT 2s

I’m pretty sure you don’t spend 5 hours a day working on the yearbook…

I’m pretty sure I do. If you knew anything about me you would know yearbook is my priority. Plus my friends are there, so it doesn’t feel like 5 hours. In fact, I have spent up to 45 hours at yearbook before (but that was the worst deadline of my life and I left at ten every night and one night I left at 2AM!)
