So I checked my Financial Aid Award online and they left an out-of-pocket cost of about $10k. My EFC is around $4k. They gave me around $7k in loans and didn't include the Federal Pell Grant I qualified for (granted, they probably made this award before I updated my FAFSA, I overestimated the first time). I still have a couple documents I need to turn in and I want to ask them to update my Financial Aid Award. But...

Georgetown met my full need with no loans... while I still want to consider GW, I highly doubt they will provide a FinAid Package as good or better than that.

I was going to visit GW on April 13th, maybe even stop by the Financial Aid Office... but should I even bother? I highly doubt I will be satisfied with my award even if they do update it. And I honestly don't feel like getting the missing documents together (IRS Transcript, social security card, verification worksheet, etc. really annoying stuff)

If you read all of this, thank you lol

So what's your 2 cents?

Have you visited Georgetown yet and felt a ‘good vibe’ from it?

If the answer is yes to both of those, then go for it. The only reason I ask is because with both Georgetown and GWU, they elicit strong reactions from people who visit them. People either love or hate the Jesuit nature of Georgetown or love or hate the urban campus of GWU.

That being said, it would be hard for a lot of people to pay an extra $40k to go to a school a few miles away that many would argue isn’t any better (or may be worse) than the free school.

Hey,

I am in a very similar situation. My EFC is 1.5k, but they left me with about a $7k gap to pay out of pocket and $7k in loans ($14k total).

Unlike Georgetown, GW doesnt guarantee to fully meet-need (bummer…). It seems like Georgetown does that exactly, and even leaves you without loans. And since GW is a CSS school, for all we know GW could have met both of our “need” from what they determined we could afford (another bummer).

I think it would be worth to contact the finaid office. Tell them about your updated FAFSA, send in all those annoying documents and then contact them again. Just by doing those two things, you should probably get a little more aid since you said you overestimated. After that, call again and see if you can negotiate any scholarships. Though, honestly, you probably will not get close to what Georgetown offered you. If you are an extremely squeaky, but polite, wheel, you may get $5k in this entire process (but maybe $0k).

All in all, it comes down to your personal preference. GW and Georgetown are radically different schools so if you really hate Georgetown and are willing to pay whatever out-of-pocket expenses for GW, then it is obvious what you said do (see above paragraph).

Good luck!

i feel the same way. my efc is $850. not even 1k! lol but i still have to pay about 9k and then i have 7k in loans so … 16k. which i dont have. im going on monday so im planning on talking to the fin aid office and asking for more. i’ve applied for more scholarships and stuff but idk. i also need to hand in some more stuff.

but i’d say talk to them ! and re-visit. if you’re into the Jesuit thing then go to Gtown. but if you really love the urban feel of GW then come here :)

So after seriously considering the atmosphere of both campuses, my possible new FinAid package from GW, and the academics of both schools (and the prestige of course), I’ve decided that I will go to Georgetown.

My reasons:

I hate loans.

GW kids are known as “Georgetown Rejects” (I literally just learned that from researching both schools).

I’m going for International Economics (Elliot vs. SFS) and I know Georgetown’s program is better.

The religious affiliation thing doesn’t bother me at all.

The only two things GW has over GT is being integrated into the city and people party more/are more social. I don’t think either of those things are worth stretching money I don’t have.

Anybody disagree?

well the whole “gtown rejects” isnt completely true.
some people chose GW over gtown . and i personally couldn’t stand that place so i didnt even apply.

but GW is closer to the white house and isnt so secluded .

Some of those reasons were good, while others were mildly insulting.

I, personally, would never go to Georgetown because I wanted a large private city school, where Georgetown wasn’t that. If Georgetown is “in DC”, then so is the University of Maryland :P

But if you can go to a school that is ranked better in your major with less loans/cost, then it seems like the choice is obvious. So I don’t think anyone will disagree with you, unless they have a personal, subjective, bias against the school. Objectively, your reasoning is sound!

Yeah, the whole “Georgetown Rejects” thing was insulting. I apologize for that, I was just thrown off guard by hearing about it. I literally just read that 5 minutes before I made the post. After re-reading the post, I see that it doesn’t even constitute as a reason. Oops.

i feel really dumb, but how do you check your financial aid package online for gw? I’ve been dying for it to come in the mail

…i figured it out. please excuse me haha
