Should I Even Try? Chance?

Hello guys, I visited Brown University a week ago and I really love it. I just don’t think I am competitive enough to even have a chance compared to some of the people on this site.

But here’s my stats:

GPA: W- 4.5 (4.75 by next year) UW- 4.0
Rank: 1/276, 3-way tie at the moment.
PSAT: 194 (without an prep whatsoever)
SAT: Taking in June, hoping to make 2100-2300.
SAT Subject Tests: Taking Biology, Chemistry, and Math II next year. Going for 750+ on all of them.

Very noncompetitive high school in NC. Only sent 2-3 to Ivy’s in school’s history. No AP’s available until Junior Year and only 2 then. I am a sophomore.

Junior Year:

AP Biology - yearlong
AP English Language - yearlong
Honors Physics (NO AP)
Honors Pre-Calculus
Honors US History (NO AP)
Honors Psychology (No AP until Senior year)

Self Study: AP Chemistry maybe AP Human Geo

IMPORTANT: This is the hardest possible schedule. My school is terrible when it comes to course offering, as you probably figured out by now.

Senior Year:

AP Calculus AB - No BC (yearlong)
AP English Literature (yearlong)
AP Psychology -online
AP Statistics -online
Honors Native American Studies
Honors Chemistry 2 (No AP, but will have already self-studied AP Chem  )

Self Study: AP Physics B

EC’s:

Junior Class Officer - President
FTA (Future Thinkers of America) - Founder and President
Leo Club - Treasurer
Soccer- (played for 11 years, Captain of team my freshman year)
Track and Field (all 4 years of high school, 3rd in the state as a freshman)
Football - (all 4 years, Kicker for the team, leading scorer past 2 years)
Clubs: Leo Club (community service), National Honors Society, Envirothon Team, Spanish Club, Freshman Mentor, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Math Lab (tutoring kids in Algebra 1 and Geometry)

Community Service:

200 hours so far. Doing a very VERY long list of things. Hoping to get 400+ before I graduate.

Awards/ Achievements: (to date)

Accepted to Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics for this summer. Only 250 state-wide were accepted.
Nominated for Medical program at John Hopkins (can’t go)
Scholar Athlete Award 2011-12.
Best in Biology Award
Best in Spanish Award
All A’s through Middle School and High School.
Will be applying to Summer @ Brown next year. Or I will go to NC’s Governor’s school.

So what do you think? Feel free to be brutal (if needed). I am content with Chapel Hill and Wake Forest if Brown doesn’t work out.

Thank you!!! :)

If you do well on your ACT/ SAT (i.e. 2200 or 33/34), I think you have a great chance of gaining admittance. I applied this last year for the class of 2016, and I was accepted. If you look at my stats you’ll see that they were not that amazing, but I worked hard. Do well on the objective aspects of the application (SAT, ACT, “GPA”) and wow them with your extra-curriculars. I applied for the Chemistry department, but I was a competitive swimmer and currently have artwork showing in some of San Diego’s better galleries. Brown cares about the person inside the student, so show your personality through your extra-curriculars. Isolate and condense your activities into ones that YOU WANT TO DO–not ones that will simply “look good”. Even though Brown wasn’t my first choice (Stanford), I feel that it will be a better fit for me in the end. Work hard, and don’t sweat it. Good luck!

Thank you! I will most likely apply for the Biology dept. It is my passion, I never get tired of it. The thing I lack on the SAT is the reading portion. Once I get that under control I hope to score around 2200. What is your stats?

Thanks! :)
