Should I get a new MacBook Pro or keep my current one and get an iMac?

Hi,
I'm going to college this year and I need help choosing what to get. Currently I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro that is 3 years old. Should I keep that and get a 27 inch iMac or give this to my mom and get a 15 inch MacBook Pro? I'm not going with PC because I love Macs. I will not go with windows so please don't even try. What would the Pros and Cons be of having a desktop vs laptop? Is it really necessary to have 2 computers?
Thanks!

Laptop all the way. Main pro = portability. I feel like most laptops, especially macs can do as much / even more than any desktop can. I don’t really think you need more than one decent laptop but it depends on what you need them for. I personally don’t see anything wrong with just keeping your macbook pro and not getting anything else, but if you feel so inclined I’d give the macbook to your mother get a 15 in macbook pro. If money isn’t really a factor or anything.

Well you will need a laptop. Understand that if you keep it and get an imac then you are stuck with it for another few years until you can get another laptop. The 15 inch Macbook pro is awesome. I have the 2.2 i7 with the upgraded graphics and I love it. It’s my first mac and I was really pretty nervous about how much it was but I can tell I will be using it for years to come. The issue here is will you be able to deal with the 3 year old hardware for 4 more years? Also can you even fit a iMac in a dorm room. Keep in mind an iMac uses mostly laptop parts so you won’t see a huge difference in performance unless you get all the upgraded goodies. I have a 27 inch monitor I plan to take with me and use at my desk which I will plug my macbook into.

dont get any new macbook pro yet. there are rumors that new designed macbook pros are coming out early 2012. just use your 3 year 13" for now and get new one in jan/feb

In terms of what?
